The Bear League has great goals and efforts, but.... Early this afternoon I squeezed in time amid work to call the Bear League about an injured bird I saw in the parking lot at King's Beach off Raccoon Road late yesterday afternoon. It was the fifth call I made trying to find help. I wouldn't have considered calling the Bear League, but one of the other animal organizations I called suggested it as a possibility. The first four animal organizations in Tahoe/Truckee were very kind and brainstormed other contacts when they couldn't lend direct help. The fifth call, to the Bear League, was completely different. I have made hundreds of such calls at this point in my life, but I have never experienced someone as rude as the woman who answered the phone for the Bear League. She chastised me the whole time, for example, sarcastically saying they would have no volunteers if they sent them out for things like this. Apparently (to my surprise), they would help wild birds, but only if brought to them. As the woman's rudeness escalated during her unsolicited monolog, she said, "This is the most insane call I have ever had," at which point I ended the call. I usually think of people involved in animal welfare as caring about all living things and appreciating others who do. It is not out of the question that a group might have a connection in the area who could make a brief stop to look for the bird in that confined area. Although I didn't locate help in the five calls, the first four were answered by respectful staff who attempted to facilitate redirection. Conversely, the Bear League person was so egregiously impolite that I'm shocked she is permitted to work there and, especially, to answer the phone. Unfortunately, I now have a bad impression of that organization.

Very rude, I’ve never had an experience with a bear and called to get some questions answered and details I needed to know. The lady was so rude and mean to me that I wish I could give this place 0 stars!

They do great work to protect all wildlife around Tahoe. As more humans invade wildlife habitat, there are more interactions between humans and wildlife, and the Bear League educates, advocates and helps keep everyone safe.
