Great tour, and it's definitely worth a stop! Friendly and knowledgeable staff and guides. Boat ride over to the caverns was awesome, and on a nicer weather day, I could see it being really cool for spotting wildlife, etc. Bring warm hats and rain gear because if it's raining, there's a good chance you'll get wet. Caverns were spectacular! There's lots of great formations and picture worthy spots. On a side note, if traveling to the caverns via truck and travel trailer, the road to the tour site is narrow and windy, but we made it easily with our 30-foot trailer, and there was space to park.

Note: This review is primarily regarding the institution's preparedness and response for covid rather than the Caverns experience. Read if you're concerned about these and are planning an imminent trip. Two stars for not following covid and social distancing instructions. One of the receptionists was not wearing a mask while handing out tickets (she wasn't at my counter). When I ask whether it was not mandated at this place, the receptionist (who was wearing a mask) replied that it was suggested but still optional. This was itself appalling, but my wife and I decided to go ahead and see since when we'd called them earlier to ask whether they we're practicing social distancing, they told us they were only giving out 30 tickets/session as opposed to 70/session earlier. This turned out to be a lie since there were 54 people on the boat during our 330pm slot. We still took the boat to the other side, but finally gave in when we saw them packing 18-19 people in each tiny bus (air conditioned closed container, with people nonchalantly not wearing masks). This institution is clearly trying to get by making as much money as they can at the expense of public health. We decided not to go any further and took the boat back. They were nice enough to give us a refund for our tickets, and the coordinator was clearly miffed about her staff not paying any heed to these times, so 1 extra star for these at least.

We loved our experience! My dad is a stroke survivor, has limited strength and walks with a cane. We called ahead to ask details about the amount of walking and stairs involved in the tour. This is definatly not for the weak. We were given good detail about the stairs in the tour but not the amount of stairs and walking required to access the boat. It is a five minute walk depending on the level of the lake. And the decline to the lake is significant! My dad was determined and we took our time. Our tour guide Nichole was very kind and gracious. The experience was well worth the extra effort. But I would encourage you to know your limits.

The trip started with a fairy boat crossing the reservoir with the guide giving information on the changing water levels. This tour is not wheelchair friendly as it requires climbing steep steps. Lots of walking required but definitely worth it to see these great formations. The tour guides are very informative and answered all of our questions. Would highly recommend stopping by to visit if you are up in Shasta

Really impressed with this super fun tour. Well kept grounds and well run tour. I loved how we were "counted" loading onto the boat, before we enter the caverns and on the return bus. It showed they took the time to make sure they had all the visitors accounted for! I appreciated that. Quick boat ride across the gorgeous lake and onto the bus, short windy road and into the cavern. There & back, Tim & Joe were great. Our cavern tour guide Brody was , informative, funny & had great energy. Caverns were amazing. Tour is well worth it, great value!Word to the wise, no stroller or backpacks. I wouldn't bring a child under 5 and seniors should be in good shape. There are a lot of stairs, up some fairly high inclines, and some tight spaces. The stairs have good hand rails throughout, but def recommend shoes with good tread bc it can be wet & slippery in areas. Overall loved this tour and wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Great tour! You will burn a ton of calories on the tour as there are a lot of steps on the tour. It may not be suitable for those with mobility issues.

This was my second time at the caverns. Really great value, especially if you'd never seen anything like this before. The rock formations are incredible and you get to look at them for about an hour and a half. Now I'd like to mention that if your tour guide is Joe, you're in for a treat! The man has an amazing ability to present facts and history about the caverns in a way that will really catch your interest. All in all, I highly recommend going on a tour.

What a great place. Steep walkway to the boat ramp, they have stairs if you'd rather. Boat ride was short but very nice, then you disembark and need to climb a steep incline to the minibus that will take you up to the caverns. Bus drivers were informative about our surroundings, you may not have the same one going down. A short wait in a little museum, before you enter with a tour guide. It is humid and cool inside. Be aware the floor and handrails may have moisture and be slick. A fair amount of steps, largest is 80 steep steps. They have an option for people to wait if you can't make it. Once you leave, it's a fairly steep walkway with railings around the outside of the hill of the cavern. We enjoyed this tremendously, 62yo, 38yo, 5+6 yo. It's appropriate for all ages. Bathrooms available at the top before you enter the cavern. Tour guide was sweet, but I do wish they would speak louder, we had a full group and it was sometimes difficult to hear everything he said. Highly recommend.

My family and I have been to a couple of different Caverns. I was excited to see that just outside of Redding there is the Shasta Caverns. It's different for us now because we have an 87 year old mom with dementia living with us so someone has to stay behind with her. I had my husband and daughter do the Caverns but was excited that my mom and I can still experience a little bit of it by taking the boat ride and bus ride to the visit center, just outside of the entrance to the Caverns. The cost is over $40 for the Caverns and just over $20 for the boat and bus ride to the visitor center. This place would have gotten a 5 start except for a couple of things. 1st the amount of walking to to get to the boat. You must go down at least 100 plus steps or the long, long handicap area to avoid the steps, then a steep walkway to get to the boat. Again I have an 87 year old mother and when I said we weren't going to do the Caverns because it was too much, they didn't tell us just get to the boat would be a bit strenuous. In addition, once to get to the other side of the lake you must walk up the boat ramp which it quite steep and had my mom panting. Not to mention once everything is done you have to walk down that ramp to get the boat and then back up on the other side plus back up all the steps. Not sure why they don't have a tram to take you down. The next thing was once we got to the 'visitors center' there was nothing but a room with maybe 5-6 display case than had nothing in them except for 1 which was a jackhammer that they used in the Caverns. There was a Caverns movie that showed all that we were missing from going inside and some history that I enjoyed watching. My husband said that this Caverns were amazing. My daughter who is pretty athletic and in shape came out saying her legs were shaking from all the steps they did. I'm seriously not sure how those not in shape can do them. I do recommend going if you are visiting. How many Caverns opportunities do you have while on vacation.

Super cool spot to visit in Northern Cali! What a hidden gem. To get there us a little tricky, don't take an RV or large truck or van if you don't know how to maneuver on narrow dirt roads. When getting there, you don't know what to expect, the boat ride is so refreshing and once we arrive, the bus driver takes us on the most terrifying drive on these narrow dirt roads, but its so much fun! Once we get to the taverns, it's so amazing!!! It's magical and you really are in such awe! The guide is extremely professional and knowledgeable. Very long tour, narrow steps, if you are claustrophobic, not the place for you. A LOT of steps and up and down climbing them, but totally worth it. Beautiful stalagmite and stalagtite creations. What a wondrous location. Highly recommend.

If you're looking for something adventurous, educational and exciting to do at Shasta Lake, this is it!It starts with a scenic boat ride across the lake where you are guided to a bus that drives 8 miles up the side of a mountain to the caverns. Be ready to get your steps in. There is a lot of stair climbing involved but it is totally worth it. every step. I felt like Indiana Jones exploring a lost cave !They have really great tour guides and the caverns are super cool with a lot of really great history. Everybody from the boat staff, to the bus drivers, to the tour guides are very customer service oriented and helpful. There are some very cool things and really good deals in the gift shop. I recommend checking it out after you return from the caverns. We will definitely go again!
