A sushi restaurant with a pleasant, appropriate atmosphere and really excellent sushi. The price level is a bit high but appropriate for the quality.

The food here is on another level. I found you can't order from the sushi chefs at the bar. So there's that. But the utterly unique and delicious food mire than makes up for that & the sports bar noise.

Cannot recommend it enough. Food is amazing and staff is excellent. With the drive if you're anywhere in the Long Beach area.

I had walked by Kihon countless times, but was hesitant to try it due to the font used for the name in kanji being so unauthentic. I'm glad I finally tried it though, as the food exceeded my expectations.Kihon is one of the few businesses still standing in this plaza. The interior is pretty and service was excellent. I believe there were some actual Japanese chefs working in the kitchen too.The menu is a decent size and food is definitely pricey but the quality is good. I particularly enjoyed the crunchy salmon skin hand roll (albeit a bit small) plus the miso eggplant dish. The mushroom miso soup was also tasty. I thought the menu said the ceviche dish had octopus, but there was no octopus in our ceviche.I feel like a measure of a good Japanese restaurant is also how tasty their steamed white rice is, and Kihon's was fluffy and warm. The spinach in the salmon and spinach dish was a bit oily and the texture a bit too melt-in-your-mouth (in a bad way, like disintegration) for my tastes.Overall, was pleasantly surprised by the tastiness of my meal here.

***UPDATE*** this place has gone down hill significantly! It no longer serves quality food. We ordered a halibut dish and it tasted old and smelled horrible! We couldn’t even eat one piece and the servers noticed but didn’t bother to ask if something was wrong with the dish. It was definitely and expensive dish that they picked up before we were even done with our dinner. In the past, Erwin would’ve taken his time to check in but he just waves from a distance. We we’re loyal customers and have tipped well, but we can no longer ignore the last 4 horrific dinner experiences. Bye bye Kihon! We will never return to your once special place. You really have neglected to take care of your loyal customers. We are sadly not the ones experiencing such terrible issues here, and loyal customers speak about their experiences and others have also stopped going. No longer the “Best sushi place!” Great service! Was referred to this place and now it's my favorite sushi spot. I'll usually drive an hour just to eat here, but it's worth it!Seriously, it's the best sushi spot---EVER!!!My boyfriend and I have tried other places because of timing issues (our work schedule) but we have ALWAYS been so disappointed. We are so glad to be moving closer to our favorite sushi spot!!!! Thank you Erwin for making your restaurant a special place and for taking so much pride in your seafood selection and for having such a great environment!!!

The sashimi and Nigiri here is really high quality and the selection is vast. Peter was amazing as he paced our dinner and provided information about the fish along the way. Can't wait to come back!

We had gotten take out from this place which wasn't that bad so we thought we would go in person. The atmosphere is dark and depressing. The sake menu is horribly thin. The waiters basically don't know anything about Japanese food or what's on the menu. They were confused by simple requests like giving us regular soy sauce instead of the low salt version on the table. They don't have basic items like a sashimi plate. Suggest avoiding.

Really good sushi! We had handrolls (snow crab/spicy albacore/spicy salmon), yellow tail- cut roll, and several tapas style starters. Spicy ceviche w/wonton chips, tempura calamari, green lip mussels, beef short ribs, and karaage (fried chicken). This was enough food for 3 people in our group. The sake we had is one of the best, in my opinion, kikusui, which was a little bit sweet and not too dry. This sweet sake went very well with the hand rolls and the sushi. The service was so-so our waiter was very nice and pleasant, but not too motivated or quick. For a small place, 25 people, including a small bar (sushi) seating, plus outdoor, it gets very busy on the weekends. So, it was a little bit loud and the lighting was light with the sun setting. Anyway, great food, service, and prices. Enjoy!

I've been wanting to eat here for quite some time, I follow them on Instagram and have really liked their posts of their food and their philosophy. Came with the fam for a celebration and were running late, the person who answered the phone was very friendly and immediately offered to hold our seats at the sushi bar for us. With Rite Aid gone, there was plenty of parking in back. So far so good!Unfortunately, once we got in the restaurant things took a strange turn. We came in the door, and almost every patron in the place looked at us but not one of the 4 waiters in the floor addressed us or even looked us at all. For at least 5 min! That may not seem like a long time, but the place is small and they all walked by us several times during that time. A woman at a table looked at us apologetically when I tried to get the attention of the waiter at her table to no avail. I had to go up to them once, then my husband had to stalk someone before we were finally seated at our reserved spot. Why do they still get 4 stars? Because the service from then on was attentive, personable and fast. The fish portions were generous, and so unbelievably fresh. We couldn't decide which sake to get so we were offered suggestions and free tastings to help with our decision. It was a wonderful dining experience. I'm still flummoxed as to why we were ignored when we arrived, but I would definitely go back, hopefully to give them an upgrade to 5 stars!

I've got nothing else special to say about this sushi place in LB but their Salmon Skin specialty roll is one of my favorites so far and we'll surely be back for this. The place is clean and I think it's better to sit outside for a better ambiance.

Delicious sushi!! Seriously you can't go wrong here. We loved the marinated bluefin tuna and the red snapper the most. The popcorn shrimp was crispy and creamy. I would come back to try more nigiri and rolls, the service was quick and attentive. I'd say the vibe was pretty laid back but crowded, best to make reservations!
