Nice selection of beers, nice staff and great atmosphere created by the industrial look with some very cool pieces of art. I hope to return and try the food!

Barbara's is right in the middle of one of L.A.'s largest artist communities. That, in itself, makes it a pretty cool place. You just might find yourself sitting shoulder to shoulder with the next David Hockney or Sam Francis. Although plenty of outdoor seating is available, most tables reside in the airy enclosed patio. Huge windows and patio-style furniture add to the outdoor illusion. The food can be inconsistent and the service amateurish, but it doesn't seem to matter much to the droves of downtown business types who make the short drive here for lunch. On the menu are three different pizzas, a half-dozen salads like a traditional salmon Caesar, tri-tip sandwiches, penne with shrimp and, at dinner, an eclectic list of entrées that might include grilled salmon with citrus sauce. Brunch features avocado toast with goat cheese and applewood smoked bacon alongside steak and eggs, chilaquiles and a burrata salad. Considering Barbara's bohemian roots, the breadth and selection of wine may seem a bit odd. But Barbara West and right-hand man Jeff Ricks are serious about vino: they installed a state-of-the-art cellar and hold special wine dinners, as well as offering 15 often-changing artisan microbrews on tap. Bar bites range from Buffalo wings to poutine and charcuterie.
