This review is for the ski school, both the regular one and EK (expedition kirkwood). I've taken classes, both private and group at both kirkwood and heavenly and I just have to say I love the instructors at kirkwood. I can't explain why other than to say I think this place attracts a certain type of person and the resort has a different vibe to it than heavenly and North Star. It's out of the way, and there's nothing in the way of night life so you're basically getting people who are self selecting for less crowds and more of a pure ski/boarding experience. I think the customers here are more considerate than the other vail Tahoe resorts too.Anyway, back to the instructors. Debs did a fantastic job coaching my wife. I skied a bunch with Noah, and Piper and they were awesome too. I would highly recommend any of them if you're looking for a private lesson. The EK classes are super fun, especially if you're a bit more adventurous. You can hike to some gnarly areas and get to know the resort a lot better and explore some of the off piste stuff. Also, all the negative reviews for kirkwood are from people who got turned back due to parking constraints... If you're a regular here you know exactly what time you have to show up to get a decent spot and then spend the rest of the day enjoying shorter lines because of all the pissed off people who are getting turned back (and then leaving one star reviews on Yelp in revenge).

This review is specifically for Kirkwood's ski school - the slopes themselves are great!I got to the resort when it first opened, and it took me 4 hours to get my ski rentals for the lessons, causing me to be 3 minutes late to the ski class. Because of this, the instructor wouldn't let me join the class and told me to go to the afternoon class. Although this was really frustrating, I figured it was the growing pains of learning the ins and outs of having a good ski day and don't hold a grudge against the school because of it. However, when I took the lesson itself, the ski instructor made me and other women in my class uncomfortable. He fixed my form several times by hitting my butt with his ski poles in front of the class, and made multiple comments about how my "tight core" and "tight physique" makes me good at skiing. I asked the other women in the class if they noticed anything weird, and one woman remarked that he told their group that if "he was 20 years younger, he would absolutely go for them" and made several comments about how much he liked their appearance as well. I've been to Kirkwood once after that and love the ski slopes, but my partner kept asking if I want to take more lessons to improve, and the thought of taking another class and somehow running into the same instructor gives me a lot of anxiety. I don't know if I would take another class at Kirkwood again because of this experience, and wanted to share this to the school as well in the hopes that it doesn't happen in the future. I see other classes on the slopes having the time of their lives, and I really wish my experience had been the same.

It was my first time at Kirkwood and also my very first time skiing. I signed up for a first time ski lesson at this resort because it was the cheapest one in Tahoe. If I were to change my mind, I probably would have signed up at some local mountain (not Tahoe). Reasons are because I did not get to explore the most out of Kirkwood as a first timer and also I probably would have got more bang for buck at an easier mountain. I was able to go on a long green run here (Squirrel Ridge), but ate a lot of snow enough to recreate a snowman. Other than preferring to take a first time lesson elsewhere, Kirkwood gave me a great first impression. I took a morning half day lesson and my instructor was Rocky. I won't forget his "Costco pizza" versus "Domino pizza." There were plenty of great food at Timber Creek base and they also carried Beyond Meat patty for a burger to my fellow vegans, vegetarians, or pescatarians. I think that Kirkwood is fine for first time ski lessons if you have no choice but to come to a Tahoe ski resort. I would definitely circle back to Kirkwood again when I get better.

My first time at Kirkwood and I loved it! I purchased an Epic Pass this season so I've been slowly visiting all of the ski resorts in Tahoe. Kirkwood is small but it is perfect for beginners - there is an entire area with just greens and blues. Not too crowded either!I stayed at one of the hotels right on the slope, "the Lodge at Kirkwood". It was great! I have no complaints. We had a view of the lifts and our stay was comfortable. The room was very clean. Overnight parking was a bit inconvenient since it is located in a specific lot about half a mile away from our hotel room.I loved that Kirkwood had "shuttles" between the two ski lift areas and that our room came stocked with granola bars. I even saw some Kirkwood staff walking around with a basket of granola bars passing them out to people! The only "con" I can think of at Kirkwood is that the restaurants and shops are realllyyyy limited past 5pm. I came in December and there was one bar open at night and the menu was small. Kirkwood village is pretty non-existent and the small store is really expensive! Next time, I will bring an assortment of instant noodles so I don't go hungry in my hotel room.

The mountain itself is four stars but it's almost like you don't want to publicize it because it would get too popular but as someone who's suffered through more than my fair share of food at Lake Tahoe they seem to be on the up and up this year. I had chili and there were green onion garnishes. The macaroni and cheese didn't taste like school prison food. Nice!

I took an intermediate ski lesson and had a great experience! There weren't too many other people who signed up for ski lessons so I ended up getting a 2.5 hour private lesson. I had Tim McCall as my instructor and he was fantastic, super patient and knew all the nuances things to suggest to take my skiing capabilities to the next level. Also worth noting that typically their group lessons are a maximum of 6 people which is nice to know that you won't ever be in a lesson that is over crowded!

This is the only place I go to ski in Northern California! I have been skiing here for almost 15 years and I have never had a poor experience. Living in the South Bay, this is a perfect location for a day trip. Typically, we leave around 6:00am, make it to the mountain just in time for opening, and head home around 4:00pm. We can easily get at least 20 runs in on a good day. Unlike larger Tahoe resorts, you seldom need to wait in line here. Kirkwood has one of the highest elevations bases, so the snow quality is great! The staff are incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere in general is cozy and welcoming. There are courses for all experience levels. I learned to ski here and am now going down runs like Cornice Express and The Wall (double black). We loved Kirkwood!

Over the years, I've really grown to love Kirkwood. As a kid, teen and young adult I didn't care to much for it. Because back then my skills as a snowboarder were to stay on the trails and maybe venture into the trees a bit as a teen and young adult. But now that my skills have matured and developed, I have begun to LOVE Kirkwood. The terrain here is as challenging as you want to make it. They have many steep runs with chutes, trees etc. and much off piste exploring to do. The motto here is if you can see it, you can ski it. With off piste chute names like once is enough. And many runs in the double black diamond category. They boast some of the most challenging runs of any resort I've seen in the Tahoe basin. My favorite area on the mountain would have to be taking the #4 Sunrise Chair head skiers right, and traverse over to the one man chute, or two man chute area. Sunrise chair, and the elevator shaft run I've found to be a very fun run as well. The run is the perfect combination of steepness and run length to have some fun on a groomer. Practice your carving, speed etc. Zachary's, Eagle bowl, the drain, whiskey slide to high whiskey, are all very fun! #6 chair cornice express and traverse the peak to centennial bowl. The trees in centennial bowl in between the runs lightening and rabbit runs are phenomenal!!! One of my favorite spots to snowboard! I highly recommend it!!!

Insane ripoff, charged close to 3x more for snow chains. $127 for a pair that costs $50 in a auto store that didn't even come with the rubber spider strap for tightening
