“Business travel, blowouts, economic development, and unexpected blessings in McFarland.
Today was supposed to be a simple out-of-town meeting. Just a quick drive from Bakersfield, California to McFarland—yes, that McFarland, USA (cue fast runners & Kevin Costner). I was five minutes away from my lunch meeting when I heard that sound: full tire blowout. Highway 99 style.
I safely pulled off, found some shade under a tree, and assessed the situation: shredded tire, dusty shoulder, and just minutes until showtime.
So, what do you do when you’re stranded 2.5 miles from your destination?
1. Call a friend—who immediately left the luncheon to come pick me up (Teamwork: 1, Flat tire: 0).
2. Call my husband—who changed out of his work attire into jeans and drove 45 minutes to rescue me (Chivalry is alive and well).
3. Watch as his car picks up a nail in the tire just for good measure. Because why not?
The two of us limped over to the McFarland Tire Shop (literally the name), where we met Emmanuel and Jose—two local legends—who not only fixed both tires but shared a much-needed laugh in the process.
The story ends with me catching the back half of the meeting and my husband heading home, both of us with repaired tires—and some new friends in McFarland.
The day didn’t go as expected but got a great laugh and in great spirits.
A little grit, a lot of kindness, and just enough air in the tires—sometimes that’s all it takes to keep moving forward.
Pro tip: If you’re ever in the area and need help, ask for Emmanuel and Jose. Good people still exist—and apparently, they also run great tire shops- queue a 5 ⭐ Google”
“While driving home south bound on Hwy 99, I ran over a pot hole the size of a man hole 5 miles north of Delano . At first I didn’t notice it but then my car started to pull right . I pulled over and my front passenger side tire was flat . Thank God the Southern Tire Mart was right across the road unbeknownst to me . The techs were so helpful and within no time my tire was replaced and I was able to to get back on the road :)”
“The men here are very professional and kind. I took my car this morning to get my tire checked and they were very polite. I had gone to another place before this & some guy at Wasco tires on Poso Ave was so rude to me that I was afraid to take it anywhere else. The store manager at American Tire Depot was very professional, greeted me with a smile & I saw another team memeber that was being very kind and professional to another customer. They make you feel comfortable and definitely the best customer service I have seen in a long time. Definitely will recommend everyone to go to American Tire Depot. Two lanes and open garages for work. Service is fast unless it's busy. Recommend calling ahead to check if tires in stock or busy.”

“Getting a flat tire in Wasco was a blessing in disguise for the following reason. I had been in talks with my dealer in regards to my break lights coming on. My car wasn’t making any strange noises when I would press on the breaks so I was confused why my break lights were coming on. My dealer said I needed to take my car in to get a diagnostic for the breaks and they informed me of many things that could be wrong with my car breaks. Just to look at my car the dealer price would be $150 and then extra for any work needed done. When I got a flat tire in Wasco I searched tire shops and came across this one. They drove to my location to put air on my flat tire and so that I can make it to the G&F shop. As they were fixing my flat tire I told the worker that my break lights were coming on and off at times. He immediately said that I probably need break fluid which my dealer never mentioned might be what was causing the break lights to come on. Sure enough he checked my break fluid and added fluid to my car. The problem was resolved immediately. My total price to get the flat tire fixed and my breaks working properly was nearly 3 times less than the dealer would have charged me just to diagnose my car. The worker at G&F didn’t give me the run around about what was wrong with my car. G&F mechanics are professional and look after their customers like family. I highly recommend this place.”

Wasco Tire not only had our size but attempted to properly repair our tire, unfortunately the other shop damaged it much beyond repair, so they gave us a deal on another tire.
