This place has so much potential. It's too bad they don't fix things up and make it look more presentable. The rooms with the fireplace are a joke. Heat doesn't radiate off of them and they are absolutely tiny.

My partner and I have stayed here three Augusts in a row for a standing Mendocino family reunion. The rooms are always clean, service is consistent and reliable, and the location can't be beat. Although there aren't a lot of amenities, I always come back here for the consistent rooms, helpful staff, and for being the most affordable option close to the downtown area. After our most recent trip, the Inn's staff went above and beyond to return to me an item I left behind in the room which I greatly appreciated. I would recommend staying here.

My husband booked this hotel. It's very dated around the 60-70's. The innkeeper could not get us into our room with an actual key. After trying another room, they booked us into a suite. Window was dirty and you could barely see the ocean. Bathroom was a nice size and shower had good pressure. Very close to Hwy one, so you get traffic noise. No breakfast, but they had coffee. Glad only a couple of days and only spent a little time in room. It seems like Mendocino partly died after Covid. Business closed by 5pm. Good thing the resterraunts are still there.

Honestly, tell me, did your grandma design this crap hotel? Because EW. Everything is dark and old and looks like it's been there 100 years. The floors are old and disgusting as is all the furniture in the room. Big gaudy furniture.. like why? Yall need some serious updating here. Oh, and the shower water pressure sucked, the shampoo and shower gel were both empty in the shower, no free breakfast, no fridge or microwave in the room, and the air conditioning didn't work...The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is because they had vacancy and the front desk dude was kind. Would I stay here (or even recommend it)? No.

Great price for the area. Rooms appeared clean, but I found socks by the bed ( they weren't mine ). There is not much storage, a secretary desk does not appear for much. No room cleaning service unless you post it on your door. Even then, they never came. The room is obviously a little run down & needs a bit of updating. But definitely need a decent dresser. Will I stay there again, no - I'll go to Fort Bragg. It is very close to downtown area & I work consider it a good price compared to others.

Loved the ambiance of Hill House. Very charming and quaint. Staff at front desk was so friendly and welcoming. Room was clean and bed comfy, though pillows were a bit stiff. Had a first floor ocean view with a sliding door and porch which was lovely to sit on during sunset.

First time at this hotel and my wife and I love it. It’s walking distance to downtown. Ocean view is awesome. The price, awesome! We’ve stayed in at-least ten different places in Fort Bragg and Mendocino throughout the years, this place is on par with the rest. I don’t understand all the bad reviews. Yes it’s dated, it’s not a Hilton, our room didn’t smell bad, it doesn’t have a mini fridge, microwave or usb chargers on the nightstand but for those that can read the amenities, before booking, you can see that all before you book the room.

We checked into the Hill House Inn on July 28th and had several issues during our stay. The first two: a non working television and no soap or shampoo, were merely inconveniences. The main issue was a non working toilet. When we arrived there was toilet paper in the toilet, which I thought was weird. I noticed that the toilet was very slow to flush. During the night, our toilet became nonoperational and I called for assistance. Housekeeping came up and immediately blamed us for using a toilet that wouldn’t flush. After plunging for a solid fifteen minutes, housekeeping left, but the toilet still would not flush, but we still needed to use it since it was after hours and nowhere to find a public restroom. In the morning the toilet still did not work. When I went to the desk to report the issue, I was met with “oh no” and nothing else. While I understand that hotels have taken a hit in recent years, there is no reason for being given a hotel room without a working toilet. We stayed at several hotels during our trip and had no other issues. I cannot recommend this hotel.

We love this inn! The rooms are large, comfy and clean. The staff is friendly and helpful. We have stayed here so many times and it's always our first choice. When others think the rooms are "dated", we feel just the opposite: every time we arrive, it's like coming "home." There is nothing generic about it! From the Victorian wallpaper and antique furnishings, to the overgrown English gardens -- it is uniquely "Hill House."

Being fans of Angela Lansbury and "murder, she wrote", we were excited to stay at Hill House. Most of my daughter's wedding party was staying there. Checking in on Friday was easy. Sylvia was friendly, helpful and informative. We loved our vintage, comfortable, spacious room 109 with the garden view. The negatives were we could not get the TV to work properly, there was no mini fridge and the low to the floor toilet situation in the bathroom was almost unbearable. My 86 y.o. mother had a difficult time trying to maneuver in the toilet/tub area. We wished there could have been a Continental breakfast in the lobby to go with the delicious coffee they had available. Also. it would have been a huge plus if the restaurant upstairs was open. You had to trek into town if you wanted food. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and the wedding was fabulous!Nearby activities: Hiking, fishing, shopping, and boating.Walkability: The quaint town of Mendocino is walking distance.Food & drinks: Great restaurants! Luna Trattoria!

Room was clean and smelled fresh. A great spot to launch our day in Mendocino. When we tried to check out at 8:30am the front entrance of the lobby was closed and no one was there. Overall would stay again.

This hotel was average. The rooms had very old fixtures and features. We arrived at night and there wasn’t any exterior lighting, so it was a little spooky feeling.

Helpful staff rectifying a booking mistake. Ended up with a room with porch after all. I wouldn't call this place charming rather dated , obviously not much had been done since it was built in 1974. It seems clean enough and the location is great of course being in Mendocino. For the price I would expect more like more outlets for the modern day needs a bigger shower a toilet I could fit on maybe a fridge screens for the windows etc It is not a fancy place at all but pricey because of the location. Just happy to be at the coast . Next time I will look for a better deal somewhere. The lobby is supposed to be open at 7am but no one is there at 7:45. It's a bit strange . This could be a prime place if it was taken care of. I assume the owners lost interest a long time ago . One would think this place generates enough cash flow. The plants around here are amazing but it seems like landscaping has been neglected for a long time. Lots of potential but on busy weekends I am sure they get booked fully because of the location so I believe their attitude is that if it works don't fixit :-) I do not recommend this place but if it is the last place with a room available.........
