They’ve gone out of business. Visited there on Saturday morning, July 29, 2023 at 11:15 AM and the doors were shut. I will miss this place.

Amazing place to stop by and soak up the cozy chill vibes of their new location. Great books all around, and art too. Owners are easygoing, friendly people. Plus they do events and have a unique community. The best of Monterey. Their hours are flexible so just stop by and peek upstairs to see if they’re open!

Cute place, it's small and a bit pricey, a good experience and the owner was very kind. If in doubt, just stop by, couldn't hurt to see what he has.
Old Capitol Books is a black-owned bookstore located in Monterey's historic downtown Monterey. We stock a wide variety of used and new books, with everything from best-selling novels to radical political theory to local interest topics.
We are also a venue and art gallery, hosting lectures, book clubs, philosophy discussion groups, poetry readings, and much more!
Independent bookstores are locally owned and usually owner-operated stores. They cater to the needs of customers in a way that chain stores cannot. Independent booksellers care deeply about books and readers, authors and writing, and not just about making money.
