About Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park
Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park is a unique historical site in California that showcases the state's gold mining history. The park was once the site of the largest hydraulic mining operation during the 1850s, which led to the establishment of the town of North Bloomfield. While the mining method was profitable, it caused severe environmental damage, leading to a ban on this type of mining. Today, the park offers visitors a glimpse into this fascinating history, with several buildings representing the old retail stores, drug store, barber shop, and saloon. The museum provides engaging information about the park's past, and visitors can enjoy hiking trails, including the Humbug trail, which offers beautiful views of the Humbug creek. However, some trails may be overgrown or have downed trees, requiring caution. The park's campgrounds are well-received, and the staff are friendly and informative. While the park's history has left a mixed environmental legacy, it remains a beautiful and interesting destination for visitors to explore California's gold mining heritage.
Take a step back in time at this amazing state park. They have a preserved Main Street with a pharmacy that’s incredible. For those of us who enjoy the macabre there is an old graveyard that I could have spent hours in. There are fabulous docents who give the best tours. Our guide was Dennis and he was great!

Miners really wasted this area for gold . Glad it's banned now a days . I pass it everytime I go to my land 20 miles beyond there. It's where the pavement ends and the dust begins .
