Clair Tappaan Lodge is a historic Sierra Club hostel located in a beautiful setting that is perfect for all seasons. The lodge offers rustic, comfortable accommodations with a cozy, outdoorsy vibe. It features a friendly atmosphere, making it a great place for families, groups, or individuals seeking adventure and nature. The lodge is not fancy but provides a true outdoor experience with easy access to sledding hills, which are fantastic for children and families. During peak season, kids can safely sled outdoors right from the lodge, with plenty of snow and a sled run that looks like a logging road in average winters. The lodge is more of a hostel, with dormitory and small rooms, some of which can be noisy or small for larger guests. Facilities include a large dining area, lounging spaces, laundry, and a kitchen where staff prepare family-style meals, though some guests feel the food has become more processed and sweetened over time. Guests often enjoy hot breakfasts and meals, and are welcome to bring their own food and store it in the basement refrigerators. The lodge is accessible via a short hike from the parking area, which is a few minutes downhill, emphasizing its car-free, safe play area for children. The staff are organized, communicative, and maintain the lodge well, making it a clean and tidy place to stay. Its location is ideal for exploring nearby activities such as Sugar Bowl and Royal Gorge, and the setting can feel magical, especially for children. Overall, Clair Tappaan Lodge provides a memorable outdoor experience, perfect for adventures, family outings, and reconnecting with nature.

What a fantastic home base for everything to do and going on in Truckee, Tahoe and especially Donner Summit. The network of Sierra Club backcountry huts make overnights on the PCT quite enjoyable. I’ve met some really cool people out there on the trail. Get after it!!
