I have been going to this Safeway for nearly 40 years. I'm done. I purchased lamb shanks 3 days ago 12/8 with a 12/22 best buy date. I opened the package and almost threw up. The lamb was disgusting and rancid. I took it back. Last month, I returned a chicken for the same reason. Having vowed to never buy meat there again (or produce because it's so expensive). The clerk would only give me store credit because I didn't have a receipt. Dave, who has been there forever, was no help! I told them to keep the disgusting meat and the money owed to me I will NEVER shop at this Safeway again. I only went there to get gas points. I'll try the other Safeway in town. Otherwise I'm content with Trader Joe's or Whole Foods.

I really hate giving anyone less than a 3 star review but I've received horrible service here over and over now. At this point I assume they just barely want to operate. The meat section will not freshly cut the meats, instead they precut them behind the large cuts. I have never been able to get the specialty meats like prosciutto cut here at all, they just say go get it pre packaged. The roast beef they have cut is very thick, I asked for it to be fresh and sliced thin and due to the language barrier of the employees not speaking English they couldn't service anyone without pointing and fingered numbers. I completely understand wanting to help give people jobs, but isn't there a job they can do so that everyone is happy. There are no baggers, and barely any checkers here. Dairy - I have had cheese here twice that is expired. Watch out for the dates. Checkout - checkout is SLOOOOOOOW here. Slower than the dollar tree. I'm not sure if everyone is just low on spirit is but I wouldn't recommend coming here for large trips.

I don't know what the grand re-opening was about, but this is still the same meh Safeway it always has been, but now you can't find anything! It's like a Best Buy: they moved things around so you have to spend more time looking for what you want to buy. Why are the cold cuts on the other side of the store from the deli now where I can also buy cold cuts? I only go here hoping the deli has certain pre-made things like sandwiches and salads, but the last two times I went here, I was about to buy a sandwich, but the salami was grey... Didn't trust that. Next day I was hoping they restocked the sandwich section, but sure enough, the same grey sandwich was still there and nothing else. I can't find anything in this store, and I'm frankly done trying. Trader Joe's gets 100% of my business from her on out.

Very poor customer service! I shop here because it is closest to my house and will take my business elsewhere. They refused to exchange a few unopened baby puffs which were found to have heavy metals in it. I make all my own food except thought I could use these items labeled organic- nope. Trader Joe's would have exchanged it no questions asked!

Too bad no option for zero stars. I purchased a defective protein drink shaker here which leaked terribly. Brought it back the next day for an exchange. No one at customer service counter. Was told to try the floral desk for help. No English spoken. After 15 minutes an employee was paged who told me she would have to check with the manager to who she had to call. After a 3 minute conversation she's hung up and simply said "no". ...but if I wished, I could come back another time when a customer service employee was there and "dispute" the decision. Will never walk through those doors again!

The Safeway on Diablo in Novato is the worst shopping experience in my lifetime. All the remodelling they've supposedly done in the last 10 years has done nothing to improve the deli department, which is a very bad joke. No one, and I mean no one speaks a word of English, and the deli manager doesn't even know her products or what they carry. You can complain all you want to management, but they continue to hire people who have zero knowledge of the English language, and it has only gotten worse through the years. While I appreciate diversity, it doesn't work when you're servicing customers who only speak English. They had the rudest deli manager last year who I complained about until they finally removed him from deli and... wait for it.... promoted him. I'm not sure what he was promoted to, but the last few times I've been to this store, he's on the floor just walking around or moving things. I don't see him stocking shelves. This is the problem with unions; these people can't be fired. And back to the subject of remodelling. I believe this store has done 3 major upgrades since they opened, which was a total waste because they continue to ignore re-doing the floor. If you don't upgrade the floor, everything you've done to update and remodel in the store goes unnoticed. All the checkers are unfriendly; almost as though they dislike being there. Even the ladies at the Starbucks counter are unfriendly. I've shopped at the Safeway at Nave and have never had this experience. The Safeway on Diablo seems to hire only rude/unfriendly people and ones who have no knowledge of the English language.

Poor service at the deli 5/23/22 Don't go to to Alice if your getting a deli sandwice made. Unfortunately she doesn't understand what she has on her own menu that's displayed publicly . At least twice in the last 2 months she's completely made my sandwich wrong . When speaking English to her she does not comprehend . It's horrific trying to place a detailed order. Try asking about the everything bread ...lol

Ever since we moved to Novato in the nearby Hamilton community I have done my shopping at this store and have generally had a good experience shopping here. The staff have always been helpful and friendly to me. Not too long ago a new worker. John, started working there as one of the people in charge of collecting the shopping carts. He wasn't shy at all approaching me and engaging me in conversation which made me a bit uncomfortable mostly because his conversation was centered around asking personal questions like, am I married? and other questions on that same level. I have always been polite and mostly just tried to end the conversation quickly and move on. He generally follows me to the parking lot or makes sure he is out there when he sees I am in line and then engages me in conversation outside. Recently he started doing this thing where he says I look sad and asks if I need a hug and then opens his arms ands moves towards me closely. This is way outside my level of comfort and the first two times I literally ducked out of his path and quickly raced to my car. This last time he did the same thing outside asking if I need a hug and I stopped him and assertively told him that it made me uncomfortable when he did that. He stopped and gave me a strange look and said fine and turned around and then under his breath but loud enough to for me to hear said "what do you expect with (you know what's) that look like that" Obviously the you know what's is my nicer way of replacing what he really said. I finally told my husband what I had been going through at the store with this guy and my husband was very calm and supportive. A couple of days later my husband told me that his nephew helped find out more about the Safeway worker and learned he had been fired from a previous job for similar type of behavior with a mentally challenged girl. My husband asked me if I wanted him to get involved but I said I would handle it because I wasn't sure how I wanted to resolve the issue. That's where I am at right now. I am just surprised that Safeway brought someone in to work there with that on their work history record. I may just avoid the store for awhile which is too bad because it is very convenient and really like all the other workers there.

Considering how filthy this stores side and rear yard has become, can their interior storage space be much different? Does Safeway promote/condone filth?

Usually out of a lot of things even pre-Covid that the other Safeway across town has. Long waits at the deli for meat and cheese usually and I swear the employees pretend to be busy in the back or help the sandwich people instead if they see you waiting! Some of the cashiers aren't that friendly. Today took the cake though. It was busy and assistant manager Jino was rushing to check me out and as a result my broccoli and cereal ended up on the floor instead of on the belt where she intended to throw it. She did pick it up at the end without so much as an "I'm sorry." After I had paid she realized I didn't have enough of my own bags so she commented that I didn't have enough. I agreed, so they used 2 plastic bags. She is a model company employee though - despite the long lines, she made sure that Safeway got every last cent, and took the time to ring me up for the 20¢ bag fee after I had already paid for my groceries. I'm just wondering when I go back to return my bag of sugar that somehow got slashed during checkout, if I can charge them 10¢ for the bag I'm transporting it so it doesn't spill everywhere?!

Patricia G. In the sandwich station of the deli is amazing and was so sweet. She seemed very busy but was a pleasure to speak with while she made our lunches. Thanks to people like Patricia G our day of minor shopping was pleasant.
