A dear friend recommended I visit Martin (the owner of this shop) for repairs after someone recently slammed into the side of my car. My car is my lifeblood/livelihood right now and this situation has been incredibly stressful. Dealing with the insurance has included a lot of misinformation and lack of follow through and in the meantime, I am bearing the full burden/cost of the situation even though I'm not at fault and the other insurance co. has accepted full liability. I didn't go to my own trusted mechanic because my friend said that Martin was the person to go to in this situation. We went in to see him together and after sharing the situation with the insurance company with him, he immediately said that my car was totaled and I trusted his word. I brought this news back to the insurance company (insurance company had previously deemed my car as repairable based on photos), and they sent me their estimate for repairs and informed me that they needed the mechanic (Martin) to send them his assessment in writing so that I could move forward with the process. I immediately called and asked if Martin was in. I was told that he was with another customer and that he'd call me back right after that. Several hours later I called back to check in and the exact same thing happened again. I thought, "okay, well he must be really busy today" and decided to let it go and wait until Monday. I called again on Monday and was fortunately able to speak with Martin. He instructed me to email him the estimate from the insurance company and that he'd take care of it as soon as he could. Two days later (Wednesday morning) after not hearing back and seeing that the email had never been opened, I thought maybe he forgot and decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and call back. I was able to speak with him and he said he was running out the door to go pick up another car but that he'd take care of this after that and call me back. I made sure to confirm the timeline and he assured me that he'd get back to me by EOB that day. I called to check back in an hour or so before they closed for the day, but he had already left for the day. I informed the person I spoke with of the situation and he said that Martin is a very busy man and it sounded like I was just asking Martin to do me a favor. I clarified that I understood that our interaction wasn't a revenue-generating activity for them but that I wasn't asking for any favors and that I was just trying to complete the process that we had verbally agreed to. I tried to convey the urgency on my end by conveying that I'm facing a very stressful situation and don't want to take any more time than needed but that I've called multiple times at this point and am not receiving a call back as promised and that I need to be able to trust their word so that I can plan and manage things on my end and that I'm facing some real time constraints with the insurance company so I just need to know what I'm dealing with so that I can get back to the insurance company and move the process forward before something goes wrong with the insurance company again. I was assured that he would relay the message and urgency. The following morning at work, Martin called me back and immediately jumped down my throat asking why I had given his employee such a hard time. I asked if we could pause for a second because I didn't understand why he was sounding so upset and treating me as if I had done something wrong. He responded by berating me about my impatience and said that I didn't need to threaten to take my business elsewhere. I tried to clarify that what I had communicated was merely the urgency of the situation on my end and that I had called several times and never received a call back and that I was still confused as to why he was so upset with me since he promised to call me back and I had simply called to follow up when he hadn't.
