I called and after ringing thirty times without going to voicemail, someone picked up the phone. I ask if they have the Financial Times, he goes to check and returns to say they do. I say I'm on my way. It's Saturday. Parked my rental car right next to the Oakland Tribune building on 13th Street, the one with a street art picture of a thug with two knuckledusters, one with "Love" and one with "Hate" on it. Walked past a guy sitting at an outdoor table scrolling through phone, smelling of weed. At first I wasn't sure I was at a newsagent's--it looked more like a spacey grocery store. A young White couple, both dressed in black, the girl with reddish hair and a wide-brimmed, pointy witch's hat, were browsing. The Black teller tells me he kept a copy of the FT for me behind the counter. Cash only. He breaks a $100 bill, thanks me. I'm about to leave and say to him, "This is an interesting place. It's more than just newspapers!" He gives me the exact same "Thank you." I want to leave, but unable to resist, I wander around. Grocery stuff; Chips, gum, snacks, soda et al. Ice-cream, cold drinks. ATM. Coffee mugs! Magazines. Books, new and old on one shelf, mostly commercial fiction; political literature; some socialist stuff; baseball hats. Sporting memorabilia. In the back I find newspapers--Friday's Financial Times, NYTs, etc. I pick up yesterday's FT paper, go up front and pay full price for it, and leave with two newspapers instead of one. Epic!

While I was in there, somebody else came in complaining that they overcharged a friend of his right before me. They had charged his friend $12 for a pack of Blackwoods. $12! For one pack!So then I get my order, make it down the street to sit down and drink my little coconut milk and I look at my phone and I see that I was charged $18. Here’s the deal though I got one bottle of Tampico, one small glass of coconut milk, and two black and milds. $18!?! here’s the thing though, when I paid with Apple Pay, it only said eight dollars. So somehow he snuck an extra $10 on to my bill. Do not shop here unless you like being ripped off! Talking to friends about this…apparently it’s a pattern here.

I had to find out if this place still exists -there is an article ( sfgate ) I read stating De Lauer's had closed ( so has Holmes Books ). SAY IT AINT SO! I love the place, and was a frequent customer when I lived downtown in the 1980's/ 1990's. There is no other store like De Lauder's open 24 hours, never closed. Newspapers, books, magazines of all kinds WOW!

I love this place. Thank you for everything, DeLauer's Super Newsstand! It's been in business since 1907 for a reason. This place is a part of Oakland's culture. It's always improving

I would give this place 4 Stars IF THEY ARE EVEN OPEN ANYMORE ? Judging by the person who answered the phone 3 times and hung up on me mid-sentence as I was asking about whether they still stock magaines and newspapers.....Apparently Not ? As of April 1 2022, The downtown oakland DeLauer's may not be open. DeLauer's Alameda location was able to answer a phone call, and stated that they were unclear whether Oakland Downtown DeLauers is currently open for business since that other location is owned by a different owner. I called Downtown DeLauers at 10:20 AM, recieved a single word response "Hello?" and politely asked about a magazine being in stock, then was hung up on without any response. This same interchange happened 3 times in a row
