I had a wonderful and easy time here. I even found a loyal companion! You can tell the people here reallyCare about the animals. They are so warm and welcoming and even though they were short staffed they made sure I knew I wasn't forgotten about when I waited a little bit. Pleasantly and surprisingly pleased with this place!!

These people will kidnap your dog and perform unwanted surgeries on your dog. My puppy was found and given to them and I had to have her fixed before they would return her.

I called about wanting to bring a very friendly stray cat so it could get adopted. the lady I talked to got very defensive over the phone as soon as i said it was a stray cat. "okay, so there's no such thing as a stray cat, only stray dogs" and "community cats have the FREEDOM to ROAM". verbatim. gave me no other resources to help me home this poor cat. that I could take it to the vet myself. okay? this isnt a feral "community cat". it's a stray i was finally able to get to trust me since the spring because it was abandoned. you're fine with a super sweet and adoptable cat being outside in the cold over Christmas because it "has the freedom to"? the poor thing begs to come into my house every night!! I'm working on getting this cat housed myself with my own limited income, since there's "no such thing" as a stray cat. wow! thanks so much for the help!

Oakland Animal Services (OAS) has been an integral part of our lives since the day we adopted our beloved dog there. Their dedication to animal welfare is unparalleled. The assistance we received during the adoption process was exceptional, leading us to participate in their incredible foster program. The fostering experience was beyond rewarding, thanks to OAS's guidance and support. It motivated me to join their team as a volunteer, contributing to their admirable mission. The staff's passion for these animals shines through their work.OAS goes above and beyond, not just in caring for animals, but also in fostering a community that supports their cause. Whether it's through donations, volunteering, fostering, or simply visiting to learn more, everyone can play a role in their fantastic efforts.I strongly encourage anyone looking to make a difference in an animal's life to connect with OAS. Your involvement will not only help the animals but also fill your heart with gratitude for being a part of something truly remarkable.

The staff and volunteers try to give the best life possible to the thousands of animals who get dropped off there every year. They did - and gave me - everything I needed to take home a dog on the spot: food, bowls, leash, harness, crate, carrier, toys, handmade blanket, and more! And they were serious about making sure I'd be a responsible pet owner before letting me officially adopt her 1 week later. They took care of the vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying. They set me up on an app that provided advice for the first week and beyond, and were helpful when I called with questions. They operate on a shoestring budget, and rely on volunteers and donations.

I have called OAS about two highly neglected and significantly skinny dogs that are left in a yard with no food and water. One dog has had a broken paw for a few months. OAS told me there's nothing they can do since there's no proof that the dogs are not being physically abused but that they can see the dogs are in terrible shape. I think it's ridiculous to see how these dogs look and not help them. I hate OAS.

Found a super friendly cat that was clearly abandoned, I brought him in today and was turned away along with another lady with a cat. They don't take abandoned cats, and I was told to put him back where I found him. I was referred to take him there, because they take cats 7 days a week and even on their phone line it says if you found a cat bring them in. Just discouraging/ heartbreaking to put him back in this location.

0 stars if I could, IMPORTANT I adopted kittens and was never told they had URI. Just that they had a 'slight cough'. I was able to make an appointment within a week. Only to see that they have URI and my 9yr old indoor cat, virus diseasefree might have it now. I feel so guilty to my 9yr old cat. They need to be better about communicating this important information, i have been crying since from guilt. And just hoping my cat is okay, hes going to go to the vet next.

We were looking to foster a rabbit and Whitney, a friendly lady wrote back to my email within 20 minutes. A week later we had rabbit living in our home. Thank you Whitney. Though the things others say may be true, there are also very kind responsible people who also work at the shelter.

A truly horrible lack of professionalism and organization. Our puppy escaped a caregiver. We were in constant communication w them, both in person and via phone. They insisted no one had picked up our dog, dead or alive. They keep a book that is ( not ) updated of every dog hit by a car ( w confirming photos) They said they posted our flyer where their officers were dispatched. For nine days we canvassed, cried, searched for our missing dog. Turns out she'd been hit by a car within an hour of going missing. Multiple witnesses report seeing their officer pick up my dead puppy. No report ever filed. They added to our grief over our loss , unable to keep even the most basic records of their work. Shame on them. Utter disgrace of a dept.

Very sweet, clearly care about animals. That means that caring about animals is prioritized higher than smooth human interactions. That’s fine, they do ok at that too.

I love the services OAS provide. I am currently fostering a rabbit and the bunny lady I'm working with is amazing and so dedicated to her job. But they need more funding, staffing and volunteers to foster etc. The reason I docked a star is bc there needs to be an effective City solution to reporting and acting on dog and animal abuse, because you will get no where phoning nonemergency PD in Oakland. Also, dogs should not be considered property. Laws need to be changed. No one should be allowed to sell dogs, bc there's a dog crisis. I get that people need money, but this is not the way.UPDATE: I got through to Animal Control. There's a new number that you can call when you witness an animal abuse situation in Oakland, leave a message and someone will call you back asap (service until 9pm) (510) 535-4884

OAS has an incredible staff who are clearly dedicated to helping animals and serving the public, super nice and friendly staff! Ready to assist with a smile and with complete professionalism. Please donate if you either use their services or just care about critters. They are not a govt agency or funded by the city of Oakland. Thank you OAS for all that you do!!! They have 2 new feral kittens that will be up for adoption soon!

I found a sweet dog on the street, since I couldn’t keep her I took her to Oakland Animal Services and they were very helpful with this sweet girl. They were able to take her in and made sure I filled out as much helpful information as I could. Hopefully they are able to find her a loving home. She has so much affection to give ACR #70193
