Payless car rental steals from customers. Charged for fuel. Stopped less than a mile away and fueled up. Forced to take upgrade when actual vehicle class rented was available. Agent unaware of where vehicles are located sent us outside looking for a B26 location in the rain. There are no B locations. This rental agency is a racket.

Arrived at the car rental agency believing my reservation held a car for me. It did NOT. Most of my experience with Payless was unacceptable.

Dishonest, fraudulent car rental agency. A dent in the rear driver side door was documented prior to rental and upon return they are trying to charge me for the repair. Payless is blaming Sedwedge service for the charge but say they cannot help even though they provided the proof of the prior damage. I am getting nowhere with this. Just the runaround.

The return process is horrible at Oakland Airport! Myself and another customer waited 10-15 mins for an attendant to come help us. Two attendants walked past us twice and said absolutely nothing! Finally another attendant said the car self checks itself in. This would’ve been good to know at time of pick up or have signs posted that says the car is a self check in. Also the car I had would not go in to park and I had to turn the engine on and off several times and shift the gears to get it to go in park

Excellent experience, my wife if very sensitive to chemical and other odors. We were assigned a beautiful new Nissan and it had a strong new car odor which gave my wife a headache right away, the kind woman at the stand where you check out went out of her way to make sure we had a car with no strong odors. The 2nd car smelled of pot so we looked at the car next to that and it had no odor at all. We checked out and were on on way with having the most extraordinary customer service experience. Thank you Payless and the team at the Oakland airport rental car center.A very satisfied customer!

I was billed for additional days when the vehicle was returned on time. I rented the car for 1 day and they charged me for 3 days.

Pre-paid this last minute rental through a 3rd party for a one way from Oakland to Sacramento. Shuttle person that transported us to rental car facility was friendly and advised that if we were returning rental car to OAK, to fill up gas at a safe location like Costco. Apparently if you fill up around the corner, there's a high probability you will get robbed. Yikes.Payless, Budget and Avis have merged and are under the same parent company. Unfortunately, their loyalty programs have not. I am able to skip the counter with Budget and Avis, but not Payless. Had to wait 40 min before getting the counter, but the person that assisted was professional and efficient. After calling dispatch to bring our car around and not getting an answer cause someone went on break or lunch, she took matters into her own hands and went out into the lot to get our car. She did her job and got us on her way.I feel bad for these employees because management does not staff them appropriately to be successful. Counter person and parking lot person also advised not to fill up gas at gas station around the corner and to drive directly where we're staying to drop off our luggage so we don't get our car broken into and items stolen. Drop off in SMF was a breeze. No additional charges.

Can I leave zero stars??We had to rent a booster seat for our youngest. It was horrendous. Everything on the seat had been stripped completely, I assume so no one could steal something? Regardless, it rendered the seat useless. The latches had been removed so there was no way to connect it to the car. Just a free floating seat that only marginally stayed in place once in use. The parts of the seat that are supposed to hold the seat belt in the right position while in use were removed so the belt didn’t stay where it really needed to. We ended up buying a brand new car seat and never had an opportunity to even try to talk to anyone about the seat issue. Beyond the seat fiasco, the car itself was disgusting. I have never rented a car in such gross condition. It smelled like a barn, had so many stains inside and even the carpeted floor was coming up at the edges. I have never had anything real negative to say about a car rental until this one. Wholly unimpressed and will NEVER rent from Payless or get a rental seat again.

Quick and easy pick up and return. Reserved online first so don't know if that helps with the process being quicker.

Its okay unless you have to call customer service. Not impressed. Called 3 times, and only talked to one helpful person. One agent told me to call a phone number. Which was the very number i called him on. Not professional.

Unbelievable! They had the audacity to give me a big- filthy, ridiculous car after waiting 2 hours in line to pick. I always rent small cars when I travel- its just me by myself. I immediately complained to the delivery person that the car was NOT ONLY dirty on the outside- but was filthy on the inside too. It was "the last " car available so they said. it had serious stains on the seats. It had no windshield fluid- I couldn't clean the windows. I went to unfamiliar state and DID NOT want to be bothered with going to a gas station. BUT the worst part is - I called to state my complaint once I settled into my hotel. The customer service person took note of Everything said (so she said).She reassured me all things.- i FOUND OUT LATER THEY HAD THE NERVES TO CHARGE ME FOR THE FILTH OF THAT VEHICLE. I was floored. Payless charged MY card for THEIR own dirty filthy vehicle . I have been so insulted in my life.I rented from every rental company that exist- this has been my only problem. 1st and last time with Payless.

Pick-up was easy, drop off was easy - car ran well! So why 3 stars?Well - I had to call customer service on two separate occasions to get an actual receipt. I don't understand why this isn't automatically sent my way after drop-off.I would've appreciated if the Staff at pick-up had let me know the optional insurance coverage charge was per-day, they had indicated that I was going to pay the $25 insurance for the length of the rental period (3 days).

Pick up, vehicle, and return were all smoothly handled. Only one agent at 9 PM for three rental companies, so it took a while to pick up the car. Note that Oakland airport has minimal directions as to how to find rental car. Return location. Be observant.

We did not like Payless Car Rental at Oakland Airport because of the following reasons:*Do not walk customer to car or drive the car to the customer* Do not show customer how to or anything; not even about the basic features* 1st car was not inspected since last customer. It make really loud noises in reverse. You could have put us in danger.* After walking all the way back to desk, you made us walk all the way to a HUGE caravan again because your agent transposed the parking space numbers!* After walking all the way back to desk hauling our luggage again, you sent us to a small SUV!*After walking all the back to your desk, I was steamed and told them I was not driving that little car because I paid for a mid-size SUV! Further, I was not going to drag my luggage out again and wanted them to drive the car to the desk to pick up!* I asked for water because I had not had any water since I left Denver during a 2-hr delay. Your agent told me to get water from the machine. The machine was broken!* The car you gave us has a problem in the gas line. It 'burps' at times. The key flop was a pain because the car would not lock from inside the door or from the door handle!
