About The Crucible
The Crucible is a nonprofit art school and maker’s space located in Oakland, dedicated to making fine and industrial arts accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Each year, over 8,000 individuals participate in their high-quality, hands-on classes and workshops, which cover a wide range of disciplines including welding, blacksmithing, woodworking, glassblowing, hot glass sculpting, ceramics, jewelry-making, and more. The organization boasts top-notch studios equipped with industry-grade tools and safety equipment, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all skill levels. The Crucible emphasizes community support by offering free programs, scholarships, and paid leadership opportunities for local youth and adults who might otherwise lack access. Visitors and participants often praise the space for its inspiring atmosphere, friendly instructors, and the personalized guidance provided in small classes. People enjoy learning new skills, creating unique projects, and even participating in team-building activities like glass sculpting. However, the organization faces challenges due to low funding, which has led to the shutdown of some programs, such as the welding school, leaving youth without essential equipment and safety gear. Despite financial difficulties, The Crucible remains a vibrant hub for creativity and skill-building, encouraging everyone to explore their artistic potential in a welcoming environment.

This is a wonderful place for kids summer camp. The teachers are amazing and the faculty is impressive. Be aware of the lack of parking and the sketchy neighborhood though.

They are shutting the welding schools down because of low funding and no money so the kids in the youth have no way of getting funding and equipment and safety equipment
