This is an excellent desert museum. They have a number of good interpretive displays and regularly host events such as star viewing (they have several telescopes), lectures and planned trips to Anza Borrego state park and the surrounding areas. For years, this museum sat vacant. Finally enough money was raised to build out the interior. When it opened, I just had to go see it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. For its size, I was surprised to see the number of displays they had and the quality of them. They also have a nice bookstore with trail maps and other informative desert literature. If you've driven on interstate 8 eight between San Diego and Arizona, I'm sure you have seen this museum. It has an outdoor trail with many native plants. There's also shaded sitting areas. If you have an extra 30 minutes to an hour, drop by the Imperial Valley desert museum. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Really neat museum in an out-of-the-way location, but just off the highway. Well-done exhibits

The Exec Dir was very friendly and helpful. I was prepared to be underwhelmed but it was exactly the opposite.

Visible from the 8 freeway, this unassuming museum took me by surprise. It is so well put together and maintained, and informative. I am 62 and learned so much today. Did you know the desert scorpions live up to 20 years, and tarantula's live 25 years? The native artifacts were my favorite, mainly the collection of pottery and baskets. It is a must see when passing through. Really nice people working there. Don't skip the trail outside!

I did not even know of the existence of this museum not until I was invited to a dinner lecture in the museum. This museum holds a lot of artifacts which shows the history of the valley. It's a nice museum where if you look around and learn, you gain civic awareness and end up being proud of being a part of the history and culture of the valley.

Great little museum. They have some very informative videos telling about the many archaeological artifacts, the native American cultures and the history of bringing water to the Imperial Valley. Everyone was very nice and willing to answer any questions. They even allow guests with self contained units to stay in their new parking lot overnight. The museum has information about other places in the area to visit also. A must stop!

Update: entrance driveway is now smooth pavement. Large parking lot with handicapped spaces and bus spaces available. Admission is free. They are always hosting a variety of events, including hikes, guest speakers, wine tastings, and lunar event telescope activities. Trail outside the museum is interesting and enjoyable. Recently they have added what appears to be a tortoise exhibit out in front of the museum, distinguished by the large tortoise statue in front of it. Only downside is they leave their gate open when they are not open, then harass you for idling in their parking lot and playing Pokémon Go in your car. There is a Pokémon Go gym here, as well as several Pokéstops.
