“I am not a regular customer as I drive an EV. However, when my daughter and her three kids drove down for the night from the San Jose area, I used my daughter’s Audi to drop them off at the Aquarium. On the drive home, a warning light came up on the Audi dashboard that the car was a quart low. I initially thought I’d buy a quart of oil at the convenience store, pour it into the oil reservoir and I could rest easy that my daughter and grandkids were safe to drive home. Little did I realize that adding a quart of oil to an Audi is harder than getting a cat to like a dog. First, I couldn’t find the dip stick (other than looking in a mirror), much less the oil reservoir. I looked it up in the car manual in the glove box but the reservoir is hidden under plastic panels that are anything but easy to remove. Finally, in a moment of inspiration, I stopped by Matteson’s Auto Repair in downtown Pacific Grove who explained that there are no dipsticks any more and that they would be happy to help me. They literally stopped what they were doing and added a quart of oil faster than an Indy 500 pit crew. The owner refused to accept anything more than a nominal fee so I tipped the mechanic with his permission. Anyway, the point of this story is that Matteson’s knows how to treat customers and the fact they wouldn’t accept more than a token charge for my stop-the-presses oil change, tells that they are honest guys who deserve more business. “My tire pressure light came on about 20 minutes into a drive from Monterey to Sacramento. Instead of chancing it and completing the drive, I called Pacific Grove Tire & Service and they told me to come in. I bought my tires here about 3 years ago. They inspected and got me out of there in 30 minutes! Don was very, very helpful and I cannot thank him and the service crew enough for taking care of this so quickly!”

“Big Brand Tire & Service purchased Newton Brothers in the summer of 2025. Different sales software and a different sign on the front of the business, but most everything else is the same, with most of the staff having stayed plus some new faces.

Curren up front was welcoming and helpful and was able to get my vehicle on jacks within just a few minutes for a set of fairly priced tires.

I had a several options of tires, so selection was good, even the top tier prices were lower than I'd seen posted for nearby locations, including the popular big box option nearby.

Guest WiFi was really slow, but with solid 5g access on this stretch of Del Monterey, my phone's data was able to power my hotspot and I worked while I waited.

Service time was right at an hour. A steady stream of customers were all promptly and politely served. Both the front and service bay staff worked well together. I was impressed with the business and will return”

My car is a Golf R, which usually makes tire issues a huge hassle. But they made it happen. They reinstalled my tire, noticed that my rim was cracked, welded it on the spot, and had me back on the road in less than an hour. Absolutely incredible.

I made a suggestion to borrow the used tire, get the new tire on, and bring the used one back and they accepted.
