Awesome experience at great clips today! Kayla’s service was excellent and she definitely built a reputation to earn repeat business. Keep up the good work Kayla!

I am writing this because I refuse to stay quiet about the blatant disrespect and discrimination I experienced at Great Clips in Poway, California.
On September 8 at around 1730, I walked in and politely asked if they accepted walk-ins. They said yes. I then asked if they charged for blowouts, and they confirmed they did. I told them honestly and upfront that I had some hair spray in my hair, that there would be a little residue, and that they were welcome to shampoo my hair first if needed. I was transparent, respectful, and clear.
When I sat down, the stylist (a white woman) removed my hat and hair tie, and from that moment her behavior became completely unprofessional and degrading. Every time she touched my hair, she made rude faces of disgust as if my hair were dirty or contaminated. She then asked me what spray I was using I told her it was just a cheap Walmart spray. Instead of simply proceeding like a professional, she acted as if I had lice, and even told her coworker to come check my head.
Let me be clear: I told them from the beginning what was in my hair. It was product residue, not lice. I am a grown adult, and a teacher. I know the difference between hairspray residue and an actual medical concern.
The humiliation didn’t end there. When I got up, took off the apron, and said I was not going to tolerate this, I left in tears and in anger. I later had a friend go back in to tell them how unacceptable their treatment was. My friend specifically told them: “She’s a paramedic and a teacher she’s clean, she knows what she’s talking about, and she doesn’t have lice.” Even after being told that, the staff still doubled down and shrugged it off with, “Oh, people have lice.”
Manager had already left!
That made it worse. They had been told by someone advocating for me that I was a medical professional and educator who had already explained the residue in my hair. They chose to ignore the truth and instead stand by their disrespect, stereotyping, and humiliation. That shows me it wasn’t about “health precautions” it was about judgment, bias, and discrimination.
I cannot ignore the racial undertones of this incident. I am Mexican. This salon is in a predominantly white area. I can promise you that if I were white, dressed differently, or “looked the part,” I would not have been treated with such disgust, suspicion, and stereotyping. Instead, I was judged, disrespected, and humiliated in front of others — as if my ethnicity, appearance, or choice of hair spray somehow made me dirty. That is discrimination, plain and simple.
I will not stay quiet. This experience was not only offensive, but it was also traumatizing. No customer should ever walk into a salon a place that is supposed to be welcoming and professional only to be treated with open disgust, accused of having lice, dismissed when raising concerns, and then further disrespected even after clarification from a friend.
Great Clips Poway, you should be ashamed.
• Train your staff on basic professionalism and respect.
• Train your staff on cultural sensitivity and anti-discrimination.
• And most importantly, remember that when people walk through your doors, they are customers deserving of dignity, not subjects for judgment, stereotypes, or mockery.
I will be filing a formal complaint with the California Civil Rights Department and considering further legal action under the Unruh Civil Rights Act, which protects customers in California from racial and ethnic discrimination in businesses.
You lost a customer for life, and I will be sharing this story widely. I hope this serves as a wake-up call that racism and discrimination will not be tolerate not in Poway, not anywhere.

I was charged twice ($69) than before ($34) today. The lady who did my hair (no new changes) was very good as usual; but the new manager who is absolutely horrible with unprofessional/bad attitude to insist that I should pay mush more with not a very clear reason. I don’t want put the lady who did my hair in a bad situation so I just paid and left. I will never go back, in the meantime, I have told my other friends not going there anymore as well. I just feel very sorry for the hair lady who stays under this unfair working environment. This new manager has no idea how to treat/respect customers and employees well at all.

Stay away!
It took me 6 months to grow long hair, went there, showed them a picture on long hair and then the hair dresser grabbed the number 5 and went straight through my hair!
They should hire people that can hold seasers and speak few words English!

I have been coming here for ten years. Service was fantastic when I first started coming to the location then it began tapering off through the years. Last two haircuts, it has restored itself to why I started coming here. Kayla does a great job cutting hair and updating the profile. I have seen an improvement in the location when she started working at the location.

$27 for a basic haircut at a chain place. No thanks! Might as well just get out the clippers and do it myself.

On line reservation system does not work. Tells you to come in, your next. You get there, 45 minute wait, you wait, goes to 20 minutes, then back to 4o, you wait, indicates you are next, then it goes back to 25 minutes. I finally gave up, left, done with the process, just too broken to tolerate it anymore...

This was the worst haircut ever. I asked for a skin fade with a 3 guard on top. The lady did not even fade my hair, when I got home and looked closely it was literally spotty all over and not blended at all. The top of my hair was not cut evenly with a 3 guard, how do you fail to cut the top evenly is beyond my comprehension. Luckily I had clippers at home, so I was able to completely cut my hair bald . Not worth the $30.

We took our 13 month old baby for his first haircut, the salon made it such a special experience! Corie was the stylist who took care of us and she was very nice, had excellent attention to detail and we could tell she was well experienced. She not only did a great job on the haircut (it came out suuuper cute!) but she also made the experience very pleasant and helped us turn his first haircut into a beautiful memory. Everyone in the salon was super nice! Haircuts with love and skill! Thanks ?

This is a review for my experiences over a number of years as I’ve brought our son in for hair cuts at the Pomerado Road Great Clips. — — — —
We began visiting in the middle school years and our son is now well into adulthood. The stylists here do a really good job—and we likely bring more of a challenge than a typical customer. There’s always a stylist working who demonstrates the ability to work with a client who needs support with communication, or a patient reminder to hold still, and sometimes a moment to move around, then try again.
Our son’s hair looks good and he enjoys meeting the various stylists each time. We tip at least 20% and often more. They deserve it!

Great hair cut with Evette. She was very friendly and paid close attention to my haircut. She also made a couple recommendations for my hair cut that worked out great. Definitely look forward to getting my hair cut by her again.
