It's a dude ranch tucked away in the beautiful Sierras. It's not a working ranch, but one that's thoughtfully designed for guests who want a different kind of vacation. Everything is intentionally low-key. The rooms are older and have that rustic ranch feel, but they've been updated enough to be comfortable. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy without making the days feel over-scheduled.
The food is hearty, plentiful, and consistently good. One thing that really stood out was the staff. Everyone was genuinely friendly, and it was obvious that many of them come back season after season. That says a lot.
We stayed for three nights and four days and usually did two activities each day. Our kids—a teenager and an elementary schooler—spent hours roaming around, fishing, taking the canoe out on the pond, and just being kids. Honestly, it felt like an old-fashioned summer vacation, and that alone made the trip memorable.
The horses are really the heart of the experience. The wranglers clearly care deeply about them, are incredibly knowledgeable, and do a great job teaching riders of all experience levels. The horses themselves are exceptionally well-trained, so even nervous beginners can relax and enjoy the ride.
If you're expecting the level of luxury you'd find at places like The Ranch at Rock Creek or Paws Up in Montana, Greenhorn Ranch will feel smaller, simpler, and more rustic.
