On June 18th, 2025, my husband and I rented a Kia Forte. On June 19th, while driving between Chico, CA, and Chester, CA, the front passenger-side tire experienced a flat. Upon inspection, we discovered the vehicle was not equipped with a spare tire, only a tire repair kit containing a white sealant. We attempted to use this kit, but it failed to inflate the tire sufficiently to allow us to reach an area with cell service.
Due to the lack of cell service, my husband had to walk a considerable distance before being offered a ride to Chico. I remained with the vehicle. My husband attempted to contact the Hertz airport location, but it was closed. He then contacted Hertz corporate to request towing assistance, explaining the absence of a spare tire. The corporate associate stated they could not assist without the vehicle's VIN, which I, at the vehicle location without cell service, was unable to provide.
We acknowledge that we declined Hertz's supplemental insurance and expected to be responsible for towing and tire replacement costs. However, upon having the tire replaced on June 20th at American Best Discount Tires, we were informed that all four tires were in poor driving condition and that the flat tire had already been patched twice.
Had we been provided with a vehicle equipped with properly maintained and safe tires, we would not be requesting compensation or reimbursement for towing or tire replacement. We believe Hertz is responsible for ensuring all rental vehicles undergo proper inspections and are safe for operation. The condition of the tires on our rental vehicle clearly indicates a lapse in this responsibility.
We have attempted to contact April, the manager at the rental location, via email (with all the photo evidence of the patched tire)and multiple phone calls, but we have not received a response. Calls to the location frequently go unanswered, and there is no voicemail service available.
We are requesting compensation for the towing and tire replacement expenses incurred as a direct result of the unsafe condition of the rental vehicle's tires.
We look forward to your prompt attention to this matter and a fair resolution.

This car rental business in Redding , CA attached to SJ DENHAM REPAIRS is horrible and deceitful. The staff are rude and don"t follow California law. Don"t rent from them if you want a good car rental experience!

No one there, no one answering the phones, and no one on 800#. I left a bunch of messages and never was called back.

Horrible experience!!!! Wish I would have read the reviews first since I’m not the only one who got screwed over by booking sites and the location being closed. Now I know never to book through a car rental company without reading reviews first!!I am very upset with this company and will never rent from them again! I had a car reserved for 4PM at the Redding Municipal Airport on a Saturday. I thought that if I was 15 minutes late I would be fine. I show up at 4:15 and they were closed!!! Here I am stuck at the airport along with another lady who got there shortly after 4 and they are closed, no other rental car companies opened at the time and the most they can do is apologize for the inconvenience? How about a phone call alerting me that they are closing for the day and if I have any chance at leaving the town and not getting stranded I need to get there ASAP! Why during the time I reserved the car would they allowed me to pick up the car at the exact time they close?Budget has much better reviews and I will be booking with them next time!!

I live in Redding and regularly rent from this location. This past Saturday someone behind the desk called me to alert me to their closing at 4pm (the exact time I had scheduled my pickup via Expedia). Great customer service! I sense that they are aware of the bad reviews on here and are working to be better. Thanks for a great experience! (If you are traveling from out of town, I suggest you double check times and make sure locations are open. I have noticed that 3rd party sites like Expedia are not always 100% accurate. Not the fault of this location IMO.)

I got the car I needed and it did the job I needed it to do. Good job Hertz at RDD. One thing I did that could be helpful to some of these other people is I reserved the car for during their business hours. It’s amazing how well things work out when you use your head and are thorough.

I would suggest that anyone considering renting a car from this location think again. My husband is a judge who was sitting on assignment in Redding and the state rented him a vehicle. A few minutes into driving it, he realized it was unsafe as it was pulling to the left (think into oncoming traffic.) I notified them immediately, explained the car was not safe to drive back and asked how we could arrange for it to be towed and get a new vehicle. They claimed that they wouldn't take responsibility for an unsafe vehicle unless the person renting had purchased "collision insurance." What? What in the world does purchasing insurance in the event of an accident have to do with being provided an unsafe vehicle? I am tempted to sue if for no other reason that to get the maintenance records for this vehicle. And I'm curious whether they repaired the problem or pulled the same stunt with the next customer. Maybe they think it's fine until someone is seriously injured. I have, of course, notified the department that arranges travel for state officials of what occurred and recommended they not use Hertz.
