My first review, which was very glowing, was for Dr. Fassino, the greatest vet I have ever known. Words can barely praise this man enough. This review concerns the current Animal Clinic of Rough and Ready, and the new owners/vets working there, Booth and Muehlenbein. . This place, now relocated, is totally the opposite in all ways. What happened? The moving of the old clinic to a new location, was handled most insensitively. Many loyal customers never got a notice in the mail. Questioning was met by curt rudeness. A decades old, solid vet business in a charming country spot was destroyed within a year. They never remember your name or your dogs. Animals are treated.....like animals. The one or two visits we had were the opposite of the caring & nurturing we had gotten used to and were blessed by. Dr. Fassino's loving methods were even mocked by Dr. Erick Muehlenbein. Of great concern was the last visit. A foxtail was misdiagnosed as "we couldn't see anything. Keep an eye on her". It took another vet (because I swiftly sought a 2nd opinion) elsewhere in Penn Valley to find the SERIOUS abscessed problem and remove them. 3 foxtails. This once loyal client has found a wonderful new vet clinic run by Dr. Mimi Vishoot, also in Penn Valley. You just know when you enter if the vibe is good. As a dog owner of decades Dr. Vishoot's business is %100 recommended and the real deal. Also friendliness and politeness of staff counts for a lot.

I've been going to the Animal Clinic of Rough and Ready for going on 18 years. The Clinic was previously owned by Dr. Kevin Fassino. This is not a review on Dr. Fassino. It is a review on Dr Eric Muehlenbein and Dr. Laura Booth. First off, I love the staff, I have no complaints. I've always been treated with kindness and respect. It's the Dr's ... Every time I've taken my 2 1/2 year old Golden Retrievers in Dr. Muehlenbein orders X-ray's ... The last time I took her in she had Urinary Track Infection.. he did a urinalysis and it was positive.. then he said he'd like to do an X-ray .. so that was done and everything was fine. Visit cost us a little over 500.00 for a uinary track infection. I'm not complaining about the money.. I'd gladly spend any amount of money if it's warranted. I feel the almighty dollar is more important to these Dr's then the care of the pets.

This review concerns the people who bought the practice from Dr. Fassino. Dr. Fassino was simply GREAT. If you are considering taking your pet to this vet, read the reviews that have posted AFTER Dr. Fassino sold his practice. My dog went blind, suddenly, over night. In a panic, I phoned the practice but got the answering service. They were very caring and said they'd fax over my information so I could go to the practice and be there when they opened. I did that, but the rude female person behind the counter said, "You can't just walk in here with your dog, you need to make an appointment". When I explained that I had spoken with the answering service and they were faxing over my information, she said that it wasn't there and why don't I take my dog to my 'regular' vet because I'll have to wait at least three hours before being seen, although there was only one other patient present. My explanation that this IS my regular vet, was met with silence. I waited probably 30 minutes until I was able to see the vet who then tried to joke and kid around about my newly blind border collie. Not funny at all and he continued until I began to cry. He had no idea why my dog was blind, but he prescribed a course of prednisone which restored her sight. Since that unfortunate experience, I've learned that ranch dogs, who are often exposed to Ivermectiin (a horse wormer), sometimes eat the Ivermectin and suffer severe neurological effects. My large animal vet knew all about this problem. Oddly, when I was at the Animal Clinic of Rough and Ready, the vet mentioned that he used to be a large animal vet. HUH? Then why didn't he know about Ivermectin and the problems caused by dogs eating it. OK, so he didn't know the dog ate Ivermectin, neither did I, but living in a rural environment, such as Nev. Co., and having a border collie, it's not much of a leap that the dog might live around horses who are wormed. Turns out, Ivermectin poisoning in dogs is not all that uncommon. The worse part of this whole thing is the cold rudeness of that awful woman behind the counter. She treated me like an unwanted intruder. I'm looking for a new vet.

Dr. (and I use "Dr." lightly) Muehlenbein did a c-section on my bitch. He took his sweet time about it and by the time he did the surgery (several hours after I arrived) two puppies were delivered dead and those alive were struggling. I can understand (sort of) that he waited so long since it was an emergency c-section and he had other patients to see. BUT, two days later my bitch tried to whelp a DEAD PUPPY - seems Muehlenbein was in a hurry to get lunch and left a puppy in there which died and decomposed inside my bitch. The bitch collapsed and had tons of issues but survived after taking her to a 24 hour Emergency Clinic in Yuba City in the middle of the night. I called Muehlenbeing and when he finally got back to me (three days later), he did not want to take any responsibility - And he calls himself a doctor? Run as fast as you can from this clinic!

Both, Dr. Erick Muehlenbein and Dr. Laura Booth, are down to earth, good veterinarians. Dr. Eric is also a very skilled surgeon. Clinic staff is very friendly and helpful. Thank you all!

Dr. Erick and his staff are some of the most knowledgeable and caring animal people I have met. Over the last fifty years, I have owned and bred a variety of animals - everything from exotic birds to dogs and cats to horses. This passion has brought me into contact with many animal professionals. No one has matched the breadth of knowledge that Dr. Erick has. Whether we need help with allergies, ripped ears, cherry eyes or C-sections, Dr. Erick handles each situation with a calm confidant hand. His staff makes us feel welcome and handles our animals as if they were their own. I can't recommend this office highly enough!

I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone! Dr. Erick delivered my show dog's first litter of 15 pups via c-section before I was even a client. Even though Dr. Erick was in Reno for a conference, he drove back to do the surgery even though that meant turning around and driving back to Reno after the operation. He saved every pup that was alive as well. Now every time I bring my dogs in, the staff always asks how the puppies are doing and love when I bring the ones I kept in. By far the best vet I have ever been to, I wouldn't want to take my animals anywhere else.

I had a REALLY poor experience with this vet and do not recommend them. Uncaring staff and inappropriately jocular vet poking fun at our animals injury. Not funny at all. Will never use this vet again.

First off kevin fassino who previously owned rough and ready vet was wonderful, i can't say enough about him. We loved him and miss him. I took my 7 year old lab into dr.eric to have a lump looked at. and he said it should be removed which we did that day. The biopsy came back that it was cancer, hemangiosarcoma to be exact. He told me all was good, they got it all and we didn't need to do anything else. After reading online about this aggressive cancer I called him back to see if we needed to do an xray and an ultrasound. I was told no, they got it all, no need for that. I was told what I read online was just worst case scenario and I shouldn't have gone online about it. Really!! I wasn't feeling comfortable with this so I made an appointment down in Roseville at Mar Queen animal hospital. They said yes we should absolutely have tests done. They did a chest xray and I was told the awful news that day that it had spread and she probably had 2 maybe 3 months to live. Two months after Dr. Eric removed that tumor my dog was dead. I am angry about his cocky attitude and assuring me that they had got it all when he really had no idea. I would never recommend them to anyone! We are devastated by the loss of our dog and this whole experience. All I can say is always follow your gut feeling about things. Hopefully this dosent happen to someone else.

I took my mini Australian to Animal Clinic of Rough & Ready for itching. They found he had fleas and I bought NexGard and they suggested another medication for allergies. When I got home I gave him the NexGard and a few minutes later I gave him the Temaril-P. He immediately started foaming at the mouth and throwing up. I thought for sure he was having a seizure and possibly dying! We got as much of the foam out of his mouth as we could and held him until he stopped throwing up. He of course also threw up the NexCare. I called the Clinic and explained what happened and told the person on the phone I wanted to return the Temaril-P because I would not give it to him again. She told me she would talk to the Vet & call me back. When she called back she said they could not take the meds back and I really should give him another dose to see how he tolerated it! I told her again I would not give it to him again--period! They made no offer to give me another med to try and certainly did not offer to refund the $40 I paid for that Rx or to replace the NexCare he threw up. I also will not take another animal to this clinic.

Dr. Erick Muehlenbein at Animal Clinic of Rough and Ready is as good as it gets. We are new to the area and were in search of a local vet for our two dogs. We feel like we hit the jackpot when we found Dr. Muehlenbein. On our first visit with him, he quickly diagnosed a yeast infection on the skin of our dog. Dr. Muehlenbein prescribed a course of treatment that quickly cleared up the problem. Just today, we visited the doctor again because our dog was not using one of her back legs. She's previously been treated for cancer and we feared the worst. Dr. Muehlenbein spent time reviewing her records from the oncologist and previous vet, listened to my concerns, and then clearly explained his diagnosis and recommended a veterinary acupuncturist to treat the problem holistically. I was relieved and impressed that he wasn't quick to prescribe pain medications. He didn't even charge me for the visit! I don't know what's gone on with this clinic in the past, but if you're looking for a kind, bright, and professional veterinarian, I encourage you to visit Dr. Muehlenbein. Just as a side note, he's also committed to his community as he recently volunteered at the Nevada County Fair and served me a baked potato.

This review is being given for DR. LAURA BOOTH who bought Dr. Kevin Fassino's practice. Living in the country, my three dogs are prone to breaking their toenails with their adventures on our ranch. Between the three of them, I have seen at least 5 broken toenails. When I bring them to the vet, it is because the nail has broken up so high that it would be impossible to clip it without extreme pain. Every time, the Dr. Fassino gave an injection of local anesthetic and tried to clip the nail. And every time, he ended up putting the dogs out because it was just too painful. When I brought my dog to see DR. LAURA BOOTH, I was not greeted. She did not even look at me, and went straight to my dog, slapping him on the side and calling him "stink pot" and making fun of him. She put some topical lidocaine on the nail and was about to proceed. I advised her that it is too painful and the Doctor usually knocks them out for this. She said "its not that bad" and clipped the nail. My dog screamed. SCREAMED. I have never heard him make such an awful sound. I should have stopped her, as topical lidocaine isn't even sufficient for a bikini wax, but she was the doctor and I thought she might show me something I didn't know. My dog is now traumatized. He won't let me touch his feet at all. I ended up having to take him to another vet to have the nail re-treated as it was splitting up the quick from the dull nail clippers she used. DR. LAURA BOOTH is a barbaric and uncaring doctor and she needs to be educated on the standard of care for her patients. DO NOT BRING YOUR PETS HERE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. And, if you do not heed my warning, please post a review after you experience this awful person for yourself. On a positive note, Dr. Mimi Vishoot in Penn Valley has been amazing after all of this. I highly recommend Dr. Vishoot and her staff!
