Not the Dollar Tree I Remember—More Like the $1.25 Tree With Half the Value
I recently returned to Dollar Tree to grab some simple Fourth of July decorations—something I’ve done in the past without much thought. But this visit left me feeling like I’d stepped into a completely different store. Prices are now $1.25 across the board, yet most items seem to offer less than they used to.
Case in point: I bought a pack of tiny hats a few years back—six in a pack for a dollar. This time? Only three hats for $1.25. That’s not a 25% price increase; it’s a 150% increase per item. That’s a massive jump, especially when inflation over the past five years is around 15–20%. This isn’t just higher pricing—it’s shrinkflation in full force.
To make matters worse, the selection seemed half as robust. Fewer choices, smaller quantities, higher prices—yet the store still calls itself “Dollar Tree.” Feels misleading at best, false advertising at worst.
I get that prices rise over time, but cutting quantity while raising prices and keeping the name “Dollar Tree” doesn’t sit right. Shoppers deserve transparency—and more value than what’s currently on the shelves.

Almost all products are uniformly priced at $1.25. While most are low-cost items, some offer high value for their price.

I really like this Dollar Tree by Sac City college. The location in midtown was closed permanently so this is the closest one to me. Today I wanted to check out their Easter stuff and pick up some birthday cards for a party this weekend. They always have great seasonal items in stock! I was able to find some good candy, cute birthday cards, gift bag and refreshments. You can find the tall cans 16oz of soda and bottled Snapple (my fave) Bunch of cute DIY Easter goodies, baskets and decor filled the isles. Organized and clean making it easy to find what you want or need. Plenty of gift giving ideas as well. I don't really venture into the food section as that is very low quality. I do get the name brand candy bars like Hershey's and Reese's. The ladies at both cashiers were nice and greeted us with a smile, even complimented my gbaby. My gbaby picked out a cheap Barbie doll, she loves them and probably has them all! The legs will fall off but it's only $1.25 so why not? It'll keep her entertained for the evening. Workers are always talkative, helpful and nice. I come to this location often.

Please note: The time is incorrect for Sunday, they do not open at 8:00 am- they open at 9:00. I like this location, the shelves are well stocked, and I can tell they try to keep the store organized, that’s hard because ( I feel like most places) it’s under staffed- which is no fault of the employees.
