5 Stars for great, inexpensive drinks. No food served here unless you count popcorn as a food. Classic stop fore for 25 plus years. Friday's rock after 9. Not for everyone, fancy is NOT a word that can be applied to the Cabin. But fun and dive bar are perfect ways to describe it!

When searching for an after-after party spot in San Anselmo, we stumbled upon the American Legion Dugout Bar, and what a discovery it turned out to be! After visiting other bars that felt overcrowded and too much like a scene, this hidden gem provided the ideal setting for a low-key, inviting experience. What immediately struck us about the Dugout Bar was its relaxed environment. Unlike the bustling scenes we encountered elsewhere, this place exuded a calm and welcoming vibe that made us feel instantly at ease. It was refreshing to find a bar where we could truly unwind, enjoy each other's company, and savor more celebration without the distractions of a frenetic atmosphere. The American Legion Dugout Bar also offered the perfect balance of intimacy and space. While other venues felt cramped, this establishment provided ample room to move and mingle, ensuring a comfortable experience for everyone. We were particularly impressed by the large outdoor bench, which, rumor has it, may be the biggest in all of California. This outdoor area allowed our group to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and continue the festivities in a setting that felt open and inviting. And let's not forget the sneaky shuffleboard table nestled within the Dugout Bar, adding an element of surprise and friendly competition to our night. It provided an unexpected thrill and kept us entertained with its strategic gameplay and infectious laughter. In conclusion, if you're seeking an after-after party spot in San Anselmo that strikes the right balance between intimacy and space, look no further than the American Legion Dugout Bar. Escape the crowded and overly scene-focused bars and discover a hidden gem that offers a relaxed environment, a perfect setting for an intimate gathering, and even a sneaky shuffleboard table that guarantees a memorable and entertaining experience.

My husband Nick and I had our wedding party at the Log Cabin upstairs hall about a month ago and Susan was our venue coordinator. We had an amazing experience planning with Miss Susan and having the party with the rest of the American Legion Post 179 Crew. Susan was responsive and fun, and made us feel completely at ease through our party planning process. We would work with her again in a heartbeat. The venue is SO COOL. It feels like going back in time, like a sock hop in the 1950s or something. It was the perfect size for our party of 60, including a dancefloor area, but I think their total capacity is around 115 people. They had tables and chairs available, as well as alcohol and bartenders onsite. Awesome! Less vendors to hire, which made the party more streamlined.NOTE FOR FUTURE PARTY PEOPLE: The upstairs room runs SUPER DUPER hot in the summertime. We were all sweatin' up a storm. If you have an event at this venue, be mindful of the weather and prepare for it. Basically, bring a BUNCH of big ole electric fans and maybe even offer paper fans as party favors. Nick and I also love the bar downstairs. We've visited a handful of times before our party and it's always good vibes. Drinks are affordable, and you'll be in good company. We're excited to come back and visit the venue of our best party ever real soon.

Great neighborhood bar. The locals are friendly and down-to-earth. Spencer the bartender's an engaging host, there's a big outdoor space next to the creek, a pool table and a shuffleboard game inside. Sometimes live music and/or other entertainment or amusement is happening for your pleasure. Check it out, bring your dog!

"We gave our today that you might have your tomorrow." That's how this American Legion Post 179 Log Cabin came to be in 1934, which was constructed during the awful hardships of The Great Depression. The Dugout Bar was the first Marin bar to regain its liquor license after the repeal of Prohibition. My first visit here was in October 1974. I had just returned Home with a freshly minted Honorable Discharge. Viet Nam war Veterans weren't liked then by some 90% of the American population. I soon joined the American Legion, DAV (Disabled American Veterans) and VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). I then spent the next eight years ever day rotating among here, the San Francisco Veterans Hospital and Swords to Plowshares. I like this American Legion Post Dugout Bar because its members and attendees liked this hippie-Veteran then and like this hippie-Veteran today and I like them. It was my fellow Veterans at American Legion Post 179 Log Cabin that along with the San Francisco Veterans Hospital and Swords to Plowshares, as both those organizations gave me thousands of hours of the best of support, who finally got me anchored enough to start functioning in non-military and non-Veteran environments. Over the years Veterans came and went from the American Legion Dugout Bar. Some left from age, far too many left by succumbing to suicide, others left from their brutal military Service-connected disabilities. Agent Orange and PTSD being just two of many disabilities we brought Home with us. For not everyone who lost their life in Viet Nam died there. I married a Veteran in 1976 I met here and we spent Happy Time together here at American Legion Post 179 Log Cabin. Our children arrived and our time became more taken up with our children and their lives. When our children each came Home with their own Honorable Discharges, here is where we first took them as they learned to live with their disabilities from Persian Gulf War, Intervention in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Invasion of Afghanistan, and Invasion of Iraq. At my last visit here which was December 2019, my Veteran husband sat at the Dugout Bar and swapped war stories with another Veteran while they played Dominos, our Service Dog snoozed on the patio, while I contemplated a game of Darts while I softly stroked the beautiful massive fireplace and chimney which is a powerful symbol that it is the politicians who start wars and make we GIs fight 'em. For this emotional symbol was designed and constructed by a master mason, who in 1914 to 1918 (WWI) was a soldier in the German Army, who later became a loyal American Citizen. He was the one who fashioned by hand the two large and spectacular American Legion emblems which adorn this fireplace and chimney. The plumbing, electrical, and cabinetry was all constructed and then maintained by Veterans and other volunteers. Craftsmen who were Veterans were the ones who milled an alder tree in 1934 to build the blue grey chairs and rostrum still utilized today at Post meetings. Now the hours here during Covid-19 are understandably reduced the last time we went by but they were closed. So is the attendance we discovered another time we went by. "The Post 179 Log Cabin and its history exemplify the spirit of the American Legion which continues to this day to bring Veterans, Boy Scouts and Community together. The spirit of Post 179 founder's lives on today as members and friends continue in their efforts to support Veterans and our Community. Few people know that American Legion Post 179 continues to support such groups as the Boy Scouts, Little League, Parks and Recreation, Narcotics Anonymous, San Anselmo Fire Department, Friends of Corte Madera Creek, Marin County Registrar of Voters, Blood Banks, and San Anselmo Flood Relief Fund. In additions, the Post provides many other services to Marin's Veteran Organizations and the local community. Post 179 is committed to providing services to those in need, never asking anything in return." It's sad for me to read the reviews here complaining about American L
