If you value your time and effort and are averse to dealing with dishonesty and incompetence and having the rug pulled out from under you last minute, DO NOT deal with this company.We inquired about a HELOC through their website and promptly got a call from one of their loan officers. We were asked several questions, during which we disclosed that we were applying for the HELOC to partially finance our landscaping project for our newly constructed house. We clearly conveyed that we had already made the deposit to the contractor and the contractor had commenced work and that time was of the essence since we wanted to make sure we had sufficient funds to cover the upcoming milestone payments while having the flexibility of only taking out and incurring interest on what we actually needed to pay to our contractor.Over the course of the initial "interview", the loan officer told us that we would qualify for 85% of the LTV of our home and that the appraisal would be done via automated valuation model. We agreed to proceed with the application, which included a hard credit check. When the AVM came back , the loan officer pulled a switcheroo and said that actually, we would only qualify for 80% of the LTV unless we agreed to a drive-by appraisal. Red flag (never good to deal with a dishonest person). We told the loan officer we were ok with staying at 80% as we did not want any further delays in the process. Loan officer agreed.1.5 weeks of pulling together and submitting various documents, follow-up phone calls and emails ensued. During the process, the loan specialist working on the application kept mentioning that she was just waiting for the appraisal to come in. Each time, I reminded her that per agreement there would be no further appraisal as we were ok with the AVM appraisal and the 80% LTV limit. She kept saying "oh no, I didn't mean an actual appraisal, just the desk report for the automated valuation system." (Didn't really make sense since they had already run the AVS appraisal -- what was there to wait for?) More red flags.We were eventually told that our application had been submitted for final approval and we would be assigned a closer who would be reaching out to us in 2 days to set up the closing. However, the very next day, we got an email asking us to "call urgently." We were told that an appraiser had come to our house "to take pictures" and had concluded that 1) our house was under construction (the only "construction" going on was the landscaping work I had disclosed to the loan officer from the very beginning) and 2) our house was vacant and unoccupied (we have lived in this house full-time for about 1.5 years since we bought it and all the documents we submitted, including mortgage statements, insurance documents and pay stubs all showed that this was our residence. Further, there were trash cans and plants/vegetables/fruit trees around our home and one of our friends was house-sitting for us while we were out on vacation). The loan specialist then told us during the call that we were being declined based on the appraiser's report.We had disclosed the ongoing landscaping work from the very beginning. At no point during the process were we told that the landscaping work would be an issue. If we had been so informed, we would not have wasted any of our time or effort responding to their multiple requests for documentation and information and we absolutely would not have agreed to a hard credit check. Also, they sent an in-person appraiser to our home without informing us or getting our consent notwithstanding our agreement that there would be no in-person appraisal.TLDR: This is a company that is shady at worst and incompetent at best. This company strung us along, made us do all the work and lied to us multiple times during the process (do yourself a favor and read the other reviews describing identical experiences from other applicants).STAY AWAY. Your staff at your Miramar Road branch, San Diego, CA were friendly, efficient and very helpful. I would particularly commend Yesenia A who went above and beyond any reasonable expectations to assist with the paperwork concerning my loan and with setting up the checking account. I have dealt with many banking institutions and your service is exceptional.

Signed up for a home equity credit line and it was the biggest mistake of my life. Why would they even offer these types of loans? I know plenty of people going thru the same thing. $74k loan back in Jan 2022 and now paying over $600 a month and for the first 10 years of the loan every single penny goes to interest only if I can give more per month will it go to principal. 2nd year with this loan and they’ve taken over $10k all for interest. This is absurd. Biggest scam to ever exist and they don’t tell you this when signing up. Please beware of this scam.

Absolute joke of a credit union. I have now wasted over 3 hours trying to get access to my auto loan online account because PenFed locked my account. I changed my phone number and I have now had to go through hoops to see my account information again. Just paid off my loan and will now close my savings account and will NEVER do business with PenFed again!

It’s wild that I have to call and cancel my account for YEARS nonstop - terrible customer service. Annoying high pitch music call tree. Interrogate you asking SSN, birthdate, etc when your account number works fine to pull up your account. These zero balance statements follow me all around the USA for years and they even tried charging me interest? on a checking account I never knew I had. (That was waived and supposedly deleted afterwards) Here’s to attempt 16? 17? to have all these accounts closed.

PenFed has always been good to Me. Been a member for about a decade and their customer service by phone has always found a way to help Me, unlike this branch. Avoid this place if you can help it. They are always finding excuses not to help people at this location. Very disappointed every time I come to this specific branch and I hear other customers complaining as well.Maybe find a solution when people have an issue instead of being difficult. It should never be easier to get banking done by phone rather than in person.

It was fast and easy! It let me know within a few minutes if I was pre-approved for a vehicle loan.The app was user friendly which is a BIG plus to me. It was easy to navigate, had no hassle!Also, customer service was great! Walked up to a live real person teller and she helped all throughout the process. Thought I was going to have to step aside and be helped by someone else, but no, the teller, Ana, assisted me through from start to finish. Gave more of a caring and intimate customer service experience!Definitely recommend PenFed for an auto loan. They beat out all the other competitors and I ended up getting a good APR!

I asked PenFed to mail me a document and it took more 30days and 2 failed delivery I still did not receive any thing. I asked them if there is anyway to send the document by a different way (not by USPS) and I was told it was the only way... the problem is PenFed does not own their mistake, they simply rely on USPS and if the customer did not get the document they will simply said it was USPS' fault. I contacted PendFed the 3rd time and they told me the document will be sent shortly...I highly suspected they will lose my document again. This is a really bad company.

Got flagged for high risk for paying off my credit card bill with money from my savings acct which several times dwarfed my bills. Froze my acct for weeks despite my high credit score and 15yr+ membership.

Customer service is horrendous; they asked for the application number four times and she still managed to get it wrong and imputing information on their end is a complete joke. I was referred over to this credit union; hard pass. This is what you get when they bite more than they can chew. I will go to my local creit union.
