I essentially got berated twice by two separate employees after bringing my bike into the store. I explained I didn’t have a lock and just needed to purchase a couple of screws, and was there anywhere I could leave my bike? Both employees were so mean to me, continuing to berate me even as I was on my way out of the store.I’m disheartened seeing a review where somebody else brought a bike in without a lock and the cashier was kindly able to watch the bike for several minutes, as I asked them to do for me.It would have been fine if they said no to bringing my bike in nicely, but the two employees were honestly so mean and continued to be mean as I was on my way out of the store. Will never come here again.

Your classic (awesome) neighborhood hardware store. Super helpful for lockouts / key service as well. If you need help, give them a call. Marc is your guy!

Surprisingly large selection of both hardware and home goods, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Shoutout to Tina and Bonnie, what are always so helpful.

I am a long-time neighbor of Cole Hardware, having been here for decades. I recently had yet another unpleasant experience with a surly staff member. A week back, i went into the store at around 1:00 p.m. to purchase a device to check my electrical wall receptacles. After wandering around the store for a while and being unable to find the device, I saw an employee, large guy, and asked for help. He informed me that he was going to lunch but would send someone over to assist me. Ten minutes later, no one had come to help me, so I found another employee, a man with stuffed animals glued to his hat. He frowned as he took me to the spot where the devices were located and picked one out to unlock. When I reached for it, he pulled back and said he would take it to the front for me. I looked at another version of the device and asked about it, to which he replied, "That one is for people who know what they are doing." He refused to let me touch the device he had picked out and instead ran to the cashier with it. I was in a hurry, I should have just walked out of the store at that point. Yesterday, I finally attempted to use the device to check my outlets. However, it was designed for three-prong outlets, while my house, built in 1880, has mostly two-prong outlets, rendering the device useless. I realize the store has a lot of theft , but there is no reason to mistreat your real customers. In 15 minutes, I can drive to the ace on Clement. They are helpful and friendly

The lock on our door was no longer working so I was attempting to remove the doornob so I could bring it to a lockshop for repair. As hard as I tried, I couldn't find a screwdriver that would fit between the cover and the screw to remove it. So I went to my favorite hardware store, Cole Hardware on Cole where I have been going for the past 35 years for advice. I attempted to seek advice from "the Tool Guy". What a mistake! All this crumugen could say was to use a pair of needlenose vicegrips to turn & remove the 2 screws.Undaunted, I walked the few extra blocks to Roberts Hardware on Haight St. and met my savior, Eric. He took the time to look at my photo of the doornob and explained that the nob itself could be removed by simply pushing a pin in the little hole under the nob which would give me easy access. Eric even dug out a lock set and showed me where I could find that little hole. Now that's customer service!!! With that information, it took me less than 5 minutes to remove the nob and then unscrew the 2 screws of the lock to remove it.Thank you Eric from Roberts Hardware. You now have become my new my new favorite Hardware Store!

I live in the neighborhood and love this store! Recently, I had an issue with my scooter. It was missing a vital part for carrying it. Gabe willingly helped me with the issue and came up with a quick and easy solution: a carabiner. Thank you so much, Gabe!

Goodness me this is a terrible hardware store. The crew are reliably unhelpful, and not knowledgeable. They don't know where their own stock is, and nor do they help you. They frequently are out of stock on key items. I really hope that Progress Hardware one neighborhood over comes back. Until then, getting things directly from Amazon is way less hassle than trying to use this store.

From 1992 to 1995, I lived around the block, and I bought lots at Cole Hardware. I moved away in 1995, then returned in 2010. My wife and I have a house about a mile and then a smidge, away from this location. That means, after a fire consumed our neighborhood go-to, Progress Hardware, this business is once again the closest place for tools and sundries. So probably I have had a half dozen keys made there and stopped in a dozen times since the start of the pandemic. It is convenient. The prices are not an outrage. The truth is, for most items, I order online. But sometimes you need to buy whatever it is right that instant, in order to use it. And it is good to have a neighborhood shop such as this. That means we have to patronize it. Their customer service is excellent. They are friendly. It's the sort of business you feel good about having around. I hope enough people continue to shop there that they thrive. We would regret it otherwise. So pick up some nuts and bolts or fertilizer.

Excellent service! Gabe asked me if I needed help right away and made such a huge effort to find all the things I needed. Rick was a big help to me and my fiancé as well. The cashier garret was super friendly as well as other staff I came across. This will be my new go to hardware store. Thank you for having great staff. Also, how cute is the back garden area.

We feel lucky to have this store as our local. The hardware literally has everything and the staff are so helpful and friendly! Each year they also have a good healthy selection of Xmas trees.

I recently needed some nuts and bolts and the young guy who answered the phone went above and beyond getting them for me as I wasn’t able to lock my bike out front. I quickly paid while he watched my bike and I was on my way. 10/10 service I just wish I could remember his name for credit in this review. He deserves a raise! ??

Usually popping in to copy keys or buy incense sticks, but several months ago I made a unique purchase. I was visiting someone who had a window blind in distress. The first time I noticed it, it was hanging off the hinge and then over time it had completely collapsed. Their "temporary solution" (pillowcase taped haphazardly on the top which never stayed on and tin foil on the bottom portion) had become not so temporary and though they seemed to not care about it, that itself made me really sad for them every time I came by. I didn't want to say anything, as it was not really my place, but couldn't help but think of solutions that could be sneakily done without anyone knowing so as not to cause embarrassment. After some research, I found that temporary stick on paper blinds exist (!) and proceeded to call every hardware store in the city to no avail. But, cole hardware eventually came through after I stopped in several times and politely inquired about them. I appreciate it. :) Though the blind I know is just paper and thus not the highest quality, the updated aesthetics and overall energy is palpable; the room instantly warmed up. All that energy shifted, for under $10. Even better , the person never noticed so it was seamless in all ways. Yay! Attached photos are comparisons of the aforementioned window blind

if you're not white, be prepared to be racially profiled and followed around while you try to shop.
