One of the most hospitable, welcoming, authentic Italian restaurants I have ever been to. The wait staff were very attentive and helpful with their recommendations. the ambiance was great, with live music. The piano player was very skilled, and I enjoyed talking music with him at the conclusion of our dinner. The food was excellent. My tortellini were crafted brilliantly, and the lasagna was masterfully delicious. I recommend taking this culinary journey of Italian cuisine as a celebration of life, love and/or family.

I love this place. Lived here for decades and, shamefully, my first time coming here was recently. Everything was delicious and I loved the old school vibes.

Great example of old school Italian food in San Francisco. Established in 1886! Quintessential decor with long wood bar, red drapes, and fine finish carpentry throughout. Our server has worked there for 41 years!the food alone is enough reason to make your way here. I'm talking about homemade fresh pastas, creamy rich sauces, juicy tender meats, all of it.

One of my regular spots, we sit at the bar with Eric or Watson… Lalo at the door is a welcoming and friendly host and helps liven up the place. I’ve literally seen old men passed out drunk at the bar…. This is the type of place that people live… and I think that’s because it’s so welcoming…. And the bread has some great yeast… they must source the eggs from a better supplier than the mass produced one… because their pastas and breads don’t make my nose run or give me congestion… or make my organs hurt like the breads and pastas that use the factory farmed Hormel eggs… 100 million chickens had bird flu last year, that means many eggs will be carrying the disease as well…Anyways home made breads and pastas, deserts… I usually do the three sauce pasta medley with a salad… I like to have all the flavors…. Love pesto and the ravioli’s… cheesecake for dessert usually (if they have it) $100 for 2 people… it’s worth it, usually about 3 servings of bread… nom nom nom

So glad we found this truly authentic Italian restaurant! It was just what we were looking for, reminded me of the local Italian places in New Jersey. A number of the staff were from Italy, very friendly and good service. A small bar area at the entrance seemed to attract a fun local crowd. Booths are a bit worn, but cozy in a good way. Wine list with very reasonable priced options. House chianti was perfect. Caesar salad was solid, but the lettuce was not as fresh as we hoped, though coated just right with the dressing and parm, no anchovy which I love, but I know most do not. The menu has a section for handmade pasta and a section for dry pasta. I had the handmade fettuccine with bolognese and it didn't disappoint. Really tasty, cooked well and good balance of noodle and sauce. Hubby had linguine with meatballs and loved it. Oh, and the bread was so good, crusty outside soft inside and good flavor. The tiramisu was a mouse-based version which I really liked, not as heavy and a great ending to the meal.

I have eaten at many Italian restaurant. This is the oldest in the US and there is a reason it is still here. This was the single best meal I have had in years. Thank you for making my wife and myself’s trip to San Francisco!

We went here the first week of January and the food and service were phenomenal so we decided to take a party of 7 for a birthday on February 10th.The waiter was nice but the food was horrid! The clam sauce had over cooked and very gritty clams, the lasagne was just meh, and the cioppino I had was truly horrendous. Very little of the flavorless broth and the seafood was over cooked so it was rubbery. I should have mentioned it at the time but we just wanted to get out. They were a little busy but this is still not an excuse for awful food and subpar service. I will go back one more time to see if it was an anomaly but the other couples we were with stated they would not be going back.Bill with appetizers, drinks, and main course was about $700.The pianist played beautifully.

It’s nice to know you can occasionally go home again and find that something you didn’t want to change has not. From appetizers to pasta everything we sampled was an oh my. Possibly the best gnocchi I’ve ever had. Their take on a escargot in a veal stock had me a little concerned but when I took the first bite my taste buds celebrated my decision to order them. Calamari was outstanding. Service was totally on point and the old school vibe takes you back to the great days of a bygone era in San Francisco’s rich history. I rate this restaurant as a must return as soon as possible and our party of 4 agreed unanimously.Parking: Public garage also available within easy walking distance.

What a perfect dining experience. Of course, dining here is never anything but spectacular. Our family enjoyed house-made pastas, perfectly prepared rabbit and veal, and beautiful wines. Service was first rate, as always. We don't live in San Francisco, but we get here as often as we can.
