By coincidence I came in to this book store where I saw books on display that rapidly intrigued me, and made me think about diverse topics. Definitely worth a visit if you are seeking for food for thoughts.

A small used bookstore in Japantown that I like to visit whenever I'm in the area. They have several sections dedicated to philosophy, with specialties in metaphysics and Buddhism. Their children's section is appropriately decorated and has a wide variety of good quality picture books, chapter books, and middle grade and YA books! They also feature several shelves on world history and politics separated by location and region. I was very impressed by the whole shelf filled with Mexican/Chicano studies! They have a pretty nice SFF section in the back as well, though I would have liked to see more variety, such as more books by authors or color or international writers.

When you first see the shop you are welcomed by a small selection of books for sale. The organization of the bookstore is customer friendly. The book selection within this store is superb; whoever is selecting these books is talented and I thank you. Pricing here is skeptical. What is reading when the price of a book is so high? This store makes me feel like reading is a dying art. It shouldn't be. All the books have a sticker on the price or crossed out the true price of the book. My most recent purchase has a price of $2.50 on the book. Why is it I am paying $11 for it? There isn't anything inherently sneaking about covering up prices and up charging. The type of books they have is very nice. I feel as though I am allowed to explore the world with the books of various countries they offer. I appreciate the ability of being taken to a new world. Nice selection of talented, Nobel Prize and other award winning writers. They separate their sections into countries and interesting studies including Psychology, Women, African American Studies, etc. This bookstore roots for the underdog and embraces the stories of those who are often ignored. This is now my favorite bookstore in SF.

I love Forest Books. I make it a point to visit it whenever I go to Japantown. Sometimes I go to the area just to check out the bookstore. It’s a lovely place with very kind people and full of hidden treasures (and not so hidden treasures too!)

This is the most gorgeous little bookstore, with a stunningly vibrant and carefully chosen collection of books. The staff are immensely helpful, whilst allowing you to browse at length. Book shopping here is good for our Amazon-sullied souls. Thank you for being open!

Forest books is located in Japan center off of Geary close to Fillmore avenue as you can see Buchanan avenue runs on the backside this bookstore as incredibly unique with a diverse selection I believe anyone can find something of interest in the store however if you are interested in ideas more liberal oriented or interesting finds that you'd find nowhere else this is certainly the place to browse the current hours are posted in my pictures however due to covid I would call to be sure of hours and openings and remember in less than a month California should be fully open from this pandemic and hours should return to normal but double check with Forest books just to be sure

I grew up in a martial arts family and backpacked a week in Japan. I love Japanese culture. I love Japantown. Forest Books is a top notch bookstore that is recommended. I love bookstores and Forest Books is on their A game. Friendly staff can direct you in the right direction. Very cool book of interviews with the immortal Bob Dylan and awesome book of photographs of Patti Smith. Loved their books in Eastern Religion and philosophy. I picked up an interesting book on the I Ching. Like plant based legend Arnold said "I'll be back".
