I was gifted a sewing machine for Mother's Day despite never sewing in my life :-P My 7 yo daughter really wanted to take sewing lessons together so I was thrilled that Sew offers a mom/daughter class at a time that worked for our hectic schedule. We chose the 2-hour class and I didn't really know what to expect. My daughter was over the moon and can't stop talking about how she now knows how to sew and how she wished we could have spent the whole day there. I'm bummed that I didn't know about this place earlier as it would have been a perfect summer camp opportunity; planning to enroll next summer for sure! The owner showed me how to use my OWN machine(!), which was the first time it had been turned on, and made the whole idea of sewing less intimidating. Definitely will be returning to take more classes! It's a wonderful business and I highly recommend it!!!

Connie is an awesome teacher! The studio is so beautiful and clean. As an adult it was my very first time sewing. Connie was patient and made learning such a zen experience. Definitely reccomend!

I started going here to learn patternmaking, and my skills have increased very quickly based on the classes there. No matter where you are in your skill level, this place is excellent for one on one teaching.

Whether you are new at sewing or have been doing it for awhile you can learn a lot from Connie's Sew shop. I'm a beginner trying to replicate clothing from 19th century England and I was looking for a place to learn how to sew and pull off making these outfits. I found Sew in West Portal and I'm very pleased I did because instead of just creating a bunch of items that I don't necessarily need, she helped me jump right into the patterns I had. A lot of the techniques I've been learning I pretty sure you won't find easily in books. These are real world techniques that Connie's been teaching me. Her style is like a John Coltrane solo, lots of technique mixed with how eloquently flows through the chords. Sew also has a weekly camp for kids that I would highly recommend. She's an excellent teacher to the kids and the kids are ecstatic to be creating everything from stuffed animals to dresses. Lastly, she also has her line of clothing which is for sale at the front of the shop. From what I've seen, they are lovely pieces from dresses to jackets. I see people coming in to buy these beautiful outfits and if it doesn't fit just right she'll quickly alter the item with a blink of an eye. I'm glad there's a place like Sew in West Portal.

Awesome little sewing studio in West Portal taught by crafty San Francisco designer Connie Walkershaw, whose two other retail shops around the city have always been a good source of quirky, simple menswear and women's wear. Many classes here at the sewing studio are geared towards kids (seven and up) who are able to complete 5-6 projects in a week. This is extremely ambitious for a beginning sewing class that lasts a few hours a session. My student says the class is fun and she felt well supported by the instructor and her assistant. Projects do get completed alongside good supervision and instruction. The studio is unmarked beyond a simple black awning that reads aptly, "Sew."
