Let me start by saying that I am a preferred Rewards member! (Which seems to mean nothing with AVIS these days.)I picked up my car, which looked good on the outside. I proceeded to the Freeway, and once on the freeway at freeway speeds, my first freeway braking produced a terrible shaking and a very uneasy feeling when breaking; once I looked down at the dash, it read Service needed.My company dictates what car rental service I must use, but I would be gone if it were up to me. I am not a happy customer.

My horrific rental experience started on March 7, which was the worst experience ever, poor Customer Service, in correcting billed amount, incorrect payment credit card, Avis refusal to correct and as of today 15 March 2024 still don’t have corrected amount or compensation, still awaiting resolution. Was charged several incorrect amounts. Placed numerous calls and emails and I am still waiting on someone from Avis to help resolve my horrible experience.

I was originally happy with my service - nice staff, easy dropoff.Then I was assessed a fee to fill the vehicle, despite having filled it on my way to the airport to drop-off (within 2 miles). THEN I was additionally assessed a fee for pre-existing damage. Thankfully I had video and receipt proof of this.Avis in general has started assessing erroneous fees the past year that thankfully I have had proof ( I've now had 4 erroneous fees charged - 2x false empty tank, pre-existing damage, and most recently a cleaning fee for normal amounts of dirt where your feet go).I've been a loyal Avis customer for over 5 years, and due to whatever change in policy that has resulted in their liberal use of fee assessments, I cannot recommend this company. Somewhere there has been a directive to charge charge charge fees, whether valid or not.

Negatives:1) Rented car was not available, so they gave us a much larger car -- more than we needed --, which cost more in gas.2) The car smelled unpleasant.3) The car had over 75,000 miles on it and it showed. Seats and dash were stained and seats were tired. It felt dirty inside.4) The wait for pick up was over 45 minutes. Fifteen people in line with one clerk at the desk.Positives:1) Car was reliable.2) Avis people were friendly.

Better go to Alamo or Enterprise for respectful service. Disrespectful, uneducated, no common sense counter service agent. Agent have no knowledge of Avis additional charges nor how they’re applied. I asked why my 2 car rental got charged differently for late return - 1 got charged late 1 hour, 1 got charged late 1 day. And she said she didn’t know, and blame me return late and has to pay the inconsistent charge.

I was charged a refuelling fee despite returning the car with a full tank. Scam practices don't bother to rent with them.

Rented in San Jose was a very nice vehicle BUT…. I filled the car up less than 1 mile before the airport. I returned it at 2:28pm with a full tank of gas and after I had left I received an email that the vehicle was dropped off at 7:54am and that I was charged an additional $181 because the tank wasn’t full of gas. This is very frustrating to me. I even have a pic of the full tank of gas.

The "preferred" line is seemingly always staffed by only 1 person, so unless your car is pre-selected and ready to go, get ready to stand in line for a while. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the status. The staff is always helpful and nice, but really hope they can have more people to help the line go faster.
