I am a huge Gus's fan and advocate. I used to live closer and would eat here at least once a week, so I'm bummed to be writing this review.I stopped by for the first time in a few months and was shocked to see how dirty the place has gotten. It's always been rough around the edges, but I think they could use a deep cleaning.I ordered an egg salad sandwich, and once I got home I discovered there was no egg salad on the sandwich. I went back and had them fix it, but super frustrating experience

I have lived in SLO long enough to know where to get a good sandwich, until today. My date and I walked in to Gus's Grocery and was struck at how barren and empty at not only the patrons, but ALL the shelves throughout the store were either empty or half stocked. Pretty sad. Gone are the variety of drinks in the cooler, the homemade cookies on the counter and all the fried food that has one feel like you were in a country market. The slips of paper used to fill out your sandwich had several crossed out meat options. They were out of 4 of the 6 bread options and it was 1pm on a Sunday. I order a pastrami sandwich on French roll, my date ordered a salami sandwich on French. The food arrived and I kid you not, there were 2-3 pieces of pastrami on mine and less on my dates. The worst part, however, was the stale bread the sandwiches were served on. I went inside to say something but the person taking the phone order was apologizing because someone's online order couldn't be fulfilled due to lack of bread and meat. What worried me the most was we were served sandwiches of the lowest quality and when a business stops caring about quality and their customers, people can get sick--which is exactly what happened to us! I'll spare the details as this was my idea for lunch. Never again. Gus's has been a staple in our community for as long as I can remember. Today the store felt like it was going out of business as 1/2 of everything was missing. Goodbye Gus's Market. Overall Grade: F

Breakfast burritos are some of the best in town, I've tried them all and this is one of the only places I go to on a regular basis. Never let's me down.

Absolutely phenomenal sandwich. Impeccable even. I got a pastrami, provolone sandwich with the works on sliced sourdough and I've never tasted anything better in my life. I am a big sando enthusiast and this made me very enthusiastic. Great ambiance too. Not the most flashy on the outside but that's how you know you're about to taste one of the best sandwiches of your life. The outdoor seating gives off great vibes.

This is a sad review. I'm so sorry to have to write this. The last time we went to Gus's we had a bad experience and I left a review about how long it took to get our sandos, 45 minutes past when online ordering said it would be ready, and the patio was filthy and covered with broken and torn umbrellas. Since then, the umbrellas have been fixed, and it looks so much better. It's easily been over a year since we've been back. Today, we decided to give them another try. The sandos were done on time. So that was good. We grabbed 2 bottles of J Lohr Chard and a bag of chips. All good. But, the sadness I felt looking around at all the empty coolers (several entire coolers totally empty) and all the empty product shelves was almost unbearable. Where are the doritos, fritos or Lays? They only had Kettle chips and Taco Works. The place was half empty. Just made me sad. But, OK. Then we got home and opened our wine. It was orange. Looked at the vintage, 2018 Chardonnay. Give me a break. It's past its prime and not ok. We live in wine country, and we were always able to count on a good bottle of wine at Gus's. Just makes me sad. Then, I ate my sando. I couldn't believe the turkey. It's the most ultra processed turkey product out there. You know, the perfectly formed round ultra thinly sliced processed turkey that has an occasional hard chip of something that shouldn't be in there. Anyway, I hope that this iconic sando shop's new owners can somehow pull it together and get back to the quality products this place has been known for for decades.

I usually have a solid experience here. Have had bad veggies in my sandwich in the past but today I got grounded up old turkey in my sandwich. I'm sad and quite disgusted. It looks like old turkey that was sitting in liquid for a long time just completely deteriorated. Like mush. I'll have to let this place go. I only took one bite. :(

Would love to take you up on your offer to make it right. It was almost $36 for two subs. How do we go about this? Thank you.

Locally owned and Shanon, the owner is always there working hard and making sure things run smoothly. I frequently order platters of sandwiches for meetings where I work, it is consistently yummy and they will also deliver (always on time). I highly recommend this restaurant.

I remember when we went there in 1976 ( for years) and Lori was at the counter making sandwiches when it was a small town deli .. she was the best and the sandwiches were the e best. Small town local great stuff.

Ordered ahead on chow now, got there and when I approached the counter after the person ahead of me was "helped" the counter guy literally walked away so he could tell the other employees there about how his roommate was drunk and threw up all over his room. So gross. He also proceeded to try to charge me after I had paid online. Later at the park discovered he had given me the wrong side and both sandwiches were wrong. The place was filthy and I looked up their latest health inspection report. Not good. Save your money and your health and don't eat here. We have been loyal Gus patrons for over 30 years and this is just sad.

Really great sandwiches and very friendly service with an extensive menu. A great idea before heading to the airport.

I came to Gus's with high hopes because I always see a good amount of customers on the patio outside. However, I ordered the meat lovers sandwich, which is like a tri tip, and I got completely unbaked bread. I tried to eat the inside of the sandwich by itself, since the bread was pretty much inedible. Then, I came on here to see if anyone had a similar experience to me and I was surprised that many people have said the exact same thing. The owner responds with "I haven't been able to find a replacement for the old bakery's roll". To me, the roll seemed like one of those take n bake ones that you actually have to pop into the oven for it to be digestible. Otherwise, just serve it on another roll! So it can be an edible sandwich! I just don't understand not switching something up, even temporarily, if you're getting multiple bad reviews about the bread.
