I wanted to open a savings account for my kid and I called to ask if I needed an appointment. I called their branch and I was told that I didn't. Because it's a Saturday at 12:45pm the employee didn't want to help us. He said we needed an appointment. The way he talked to us was very rude and unprofessional. He approached another lady to ask if she needed help but he didn't bother to ask us. So I had to ask him to help us as he was passing by. But wasn't expecting his reaction. I would recommend to either do everything online or simply go to a different branch.

I was informed by the tall man behind the counter that they’re not a bank, they’re a credit union. If you get cash (he checked & confirmed it’s real) that is stained with ink & can’t be scanned by a machine, you would have to take it to a real bank to have it replaced.

I very much regret opening a business account with SMCU. Customer service is severely lacking. When I signed up the agent did not enter my business name correctly and it took two weeks to sort it out so I could use the debit card and use my account. Many times I have been left in the dark with communciations and wish I had stuck with SF Fire Credit Union and may be switching back.Today I placed an order and for some reason there was a hold put on my card because of this transaction. I was never contacted; no calls, texts or emails to indicate they put a hold on my card. I had to call the number on the back of the card which then an agent named Kenneth told me I called the wrong number (how is it the wrong number if it is on the back of my card?). Then I called the number Kenneth gave me to then be connected with... Kenneth! He told me I called the wrong number again and proceeded to give me the exact same number to call. Unfortunately I had to get argumentative as he wasn't willing to help or connect me with someone who could help me or transfer me to a supervisor. Once I asked for a supervisor, he refused and then looked into my account and within 10 seconds was able to remove the hold on my card.

I come here because its the nearest credit union atm to me, I deposited about "1k" into the ATM and got an error saying some of the cash was hard to read and gave me back $146 to fix and deposit back into the account. As soon as I was done unfolding the little corners of the bills, the ATM said the transaction was complete and I didn't get the chance to put the rest of the money into the machine which I assumed (it wouldn't be a problem if I try to deposit the 146 again immediately after.) It gave me a receipt and I checked my account and none of the 1k that it took was deposited into my checking. I went inside the branch and the manager didn't even show that he cared or put in effort to look into the issue. He said that they have to email or contact the ATM guys to take a look at the ATM but thats all they can do. However, they didn't ask me for my info or anything to get back to me for updates of when I can get my money back or if the ATM guys are going to be there to investigate, I was the one that asked the necessary questions which defeats the whole purpose of exceptional customer service. I also Had to google what to do in that kind of situation rather than wait for them to contact me, I found out I could just call my bank and file a claim on a dispute. The manager could have at least told me that too and it would have saved a lot of time standing there.... I'm never dealing with them again after I get my money back, I get that things happen but the customer service could have been a little more helpful, TERRIBLE bank never coming back here,.

I got an auto loan through the San Mateo Credit Union with the help of Terry Zhang. It was a smooth and easy process to get pre-approved and then later to get the loan paperwork in order when I purchased the car. Terry also answered a lot of my questions through the online chat system, and he had even made a note to include a credit union offer that he later honored (even once the offer was over).

LOVE THE SMCU BRANCH in San Mateo, CAMy daughter, who is studyiing abroad in Italy, had her debit card stolen. I was ready to go through a difficult & lengthy process to cancel the stolen debit card, wait weeks for a new one & then Fedex it internationally to Italy. Working with Jonathan, Carla and Laurie, this incredible SMCU Team printed out a replacement debit card on the spot (within minutes!), checked for fraud charges, and was able to Fedex the new card that same day!My daughter received her replacement card 2 days later in Italy :)Thank you Jonathan, Carla & Laurie for being ROCK STARS & saving the day!~ Very grateful Mom

I had called SMCU a few times for various questions and while they were all answered, Terry Zhang in the Lending Center took it one step further to really set our auto loan in motion. Not only was he patient and knowledgeable, he made sure to expedite our application and get everything in order for immediate approval. He knows what he's doing and he's quick to reply. I'm grateful that I was connected with him through the automated call center and would recommend anyone to go here for their auto loan.

Last Friday I decided to give SMCU a call regarding applying for an auto loan. Terry Zhang from Lending picked up my call and was able to help me apply for the loan, which was approved on the same day. During the next week, I worked with Terry to finalize my loan and all the paperwork necessary before my delivery. Terry was great during this entire process and made it very easy and convenient. I appreciate all the work that they do at this branch, and definitely recommend working with them.
