I have a love/hate relationship with this Safeway. Love the building, it looks like something you'd find while on vacation in the mountains. Great selection of fresh foods. Hate because of that damn parking lot design. I don't know how many times coming or going I've felt frustrated by other drivers. You know what I'm talking about if you've been here.Really need to figure out the sweet spot when this place isn't busy, so I can shop here more. Seriously I like this Safeway a lot, it's a good place to get your groceries. Getting here is the hardest part.

I've held off on writing this review for quite some time, as I've felt that perhaps I was over analyzing my experiences in this store but after this evening I feel that this review is finally justified. Just for some background, I've been shopping at this location since 2019 when I relocated to San Mateo from the South Bay.I am not sure if this store recently got a new manager or loss prevention/assets protection team, but I feel this store and staff has been profiling me for at least the past year. There are several other reviews on here regarding employees following and profiling other shoppers so I know it's not just me who has been having this negative experience. I am not entirely sure if she is the manager or shift supervisor, but the slightly heavier set, curly haired, hispanic woman with glasses seems to have a major problem with me. This evening I am fairly certain I had heard her instruct Patti and another team member (hispanic male with a pony-tail) to keep an eye on me when she wasn't aware that I was standing at a check lane within ear shot waiting to check out.I am not sure if this particular location has got hit hard with theft recently and pressure has been put on management to crackdown on loss prevention, but I am seriously considering no longer shopping at this location as I find this behavior from the staff there to be extremely unprofessional, uncomfortable, and unjustified.I work a secondary, part time job within the industry at another company and work closely with my own front end team and loss prevention team. In other words, I'm fairly well versed in loss prevention tactics and can recognize when they're being used on me. I can say that we handle our operations in a much more professional manner than this store and its' staff does.I am really growing tired of this treatment to the point where I've completely stopped using their self-check out as I'm sure this is where most instances of theft occur and now go directly to a check lane to deal with a cashier. This has done nothing to remedy the situation and this seems very, very personal at this point. In addition to the numerous profiling incidents, I've discovered on many occasions expired product including Chobani yogurt, tostada shells, and their Naked fruit smoothies. I've taken the expired product to their self-check out team members on several occasions to both make them aware and suggest that they pull the remaining product. I've also had very odd interactions with their staff member Augustine who seems a little bit off. I am seriously considering taking my business to another location or perhaps to Trader Joe's instead where the staff has always made me feel welcome and comfortable while shopping. If a district manager checks these reviews, I implore you to investigate these complaints because I am unfortunately not the only one who has been having these negative experiences.

This location the customer service at the booth is very bad. My wife went there to send money and the told her they accept cash only no card which is weird. We went to get money from the ATM bank and we came back we waited for 10 minutes then 1 guy showed up and he said there is only 1 worker who knows how to do the job and she was on lunch. How come a company like this has 1 worker to do this. My wife complain about the service and explained her frustration and the guy we'll go somewhere. So disappointed with this service. I will never use western union at Safeway

While my boyfriend and I were at this Safeway we decided to smell deodorants. And while we take full responsibility that this not allowed in most stores after about 10 minutes (literally 10 fullllllll minutes) a store employee (who looking through reviews I now know is Monique) shows up and tells us that we are not allowed to smell the deodorant and that they had been watching us on a camera the whole time. Which I found odd that they had waited so long to come tell us. We apologized and started to walk down the isle and all of a sudden I'm guessing the night manager and two other employees show up and the manger very loudly says something along the lines of I hope you're not spraying anything because I can smell it. The manner of which the person said it was extremely demeaning and rude. They had also said this so loud that the entire store heard and people began to look at us. I feel that it wasn't necessary to make a whole scene that the entire store could hear. If they had been watching us they would've known we didn't spray anything and were just smelling different deodorants. I said that we weren't and we walked away. I understand that perhaps that working the night shift at a Safeway is not the most fun and I know that some customers aren't the nicest but the way that these employees spoke to us without any human decency really upset me and my boyfriend. I also understand we were doing something dumb but the authority this person thought they had over us was astonishing. We both were so taken aback at this person snapping at us we quickly checked out and left but I wish I had said something. Anyways the other times I have been at this Safeway we're fine. This happened today (3/7/2022) at around 10pm.

My fiancé gets harassed here at this Safeway by Monique. The lady from Mountain View. I went into this Safeway earlier and received no Help, but as soon as my fiancé enters into the Safeway. IMMEDIATELY, he gets followed around the store by Miss Monique. I already approached her once and introduced myself and everything. To let her know she's harassing and following around my fiancé and making him feel uncomfortable. This is the second time I've witnessed this and caught it on camera this time. Post Number One. I do believe this is racial profiling! Sounds like we are not the only ones that get this kind of treatment. I have a video of her following us around. . On a more positive note, the manager David was very kind to us. All the employees are usually on top of their game. The deli probably needs a little help, otherwise... it's a great quiet place.

My cousin said she placed an order for balloons for her mom's birthday under her name. I came to pick them up today and the last asked if I wanted to pay for it there or at the counter...when it was already paid for. I wasn't sure I misheard my cousin but it was paid for so why did the lady charge me....

After being quite frank about my terrible experiences over at the San Mateo Safeway on El Camino Real near Hwy 92. I felt the need to relay the complete opposite experiences at the Crystal Springs Safeway. This store (Crystal Springs Safeway) is an absolute gem in every sense of the word. Their manager Bill really knows how to run a store with great staff & clean from top to bottom. It's a bit outbid there's for me, but always a pleasure to shop there anytime of the day. Exemplary example of a well-run grocery store! Robert

the safeway of my childhood - well-stocked, clean, employees always helpful, lines go fast, open 24 hours. there was no occasion safeway can't supply: i ate so many potato wedges as a kid after school, huge kombucha section close to the front doors, can always find something to bring to a party. the bakery has always been able to fulfill special orders as well. was amazed to find they sell bubbies mochi ice cream and even those boba milk tea bars now!

I was here today afternoon, and proceeded to the checkout lane where I stood behind a customer who was in the process of being rung up. The cashier who was a women in her 20-30s with long dark hair and glasses told me she was "closed" and she even came out from behind the counter and pretended to chain up her lane, so then I moved to the next lane over. As I'm waiting again in the next lane now, I see her promptly open up her lane again and ring up 2-3 Caucasian customers without any issues. These women came into her lane one by one several minutes apart, so it is not like there was a line forming. She rung up one, then stayed in her lane behind the counter, and waited, and then the other customer came and she proceeded to ring them up similarly. She never once mentioned to these other white women that she was "closed", or tried to shoo them from her lane by pretending to chain it up. She quietly and happily rung them up. Additionally, when I was asked to move aside because she was "closed", it's not as though the other lane was clear and she was doing me a favor by helping me find a clear lane--in fact, she essentially just told me to leave and i found an open lane on my own and had to wait all over again. I even looked at her at one point and asked "i thought you said you were closed" and she just ignored me and gave me dirty looks the rest of the time i was in the next line as I watched her continue to be very clearly open in her lane ringing up several white customers who came after me. She never apologized or explained her actions. She was so incredibly rude and had her nose up in the air the entire time while she acted so justified in her blatant discriminatory and racist behavior. When i mentioned this to the "front end manager" she and another male worker were so unbelievably rude and very aggressive and defensive and told me that "she's not a cashier she's normally in the office" which is not an answer or a solution; i dont give a fuck if she's normally in the office--what i know is that at that time, this woman was behind the counter at a checkout lane acting as a cashier and she checked out several guests before me, and several guests after me, while refusing to check me out and making me leave by telling me she was closed and pretending to chain up her lane. I'm utterly appalled by this behavior and discrimination towards a woman of color.

Today (11APR2021) I walked into this Safeway at roughly around 9:25 am. I was in a hurry, due to my small dog in the car and he howls when alone. Anyway, I rarely visit this Safeway, but I remembered that it is right off the 280. I was only looking for bottled water and a lightbulb. I began to look for through the aisles and found the water section, again I do not visit this Safeway because I live in San Bruno. A manager with a sign (meat price sign) quickly walked by me and looked in my basket. I continued my shopping looking for the lightbulb and few additional items. This manager followed me not only only once, but three times. I was being profiled for some reason. I am a Mexican-American, 57 year women. Before my departure, I decided to purchase broccoli, onions and bananas. This manager showed up again, but he was speaking to one of the workers. I self-checked out and the attendant was rude when I asked where the bags are kept. I will not visit this store in the future and just thought I would warn people about the profiling incident.

So bad it's funny. Website said Safeway carries tapioca pearls (in the box). Went to this store at 9pm with practically no one in the store... 4 workers were as clueless as they could be. I understand none of them know what tapioca is.. but they couldn't be worse at customer service. One guy tried looking while the others stood like blobs doing nothing. I asked for the manager (after 4 times asking), Steve finally showed up. I see where the workers get their terrible service. Manager Steve looked and said he guesses they don't have it (despite me buying it there for the past 15 years). I asked if he could check if they still carry it and it they're just sold out. He said he has no way of checking what Safeway carries unless he can take an item and scan it. SERIOUSLY!!!! the manager has no way of telling you what the store carries unless he can scan in the item. I have news for you Steve.... if you scan in an item off your shelf... you OBVIOUSLY carry that item! Thousands of people with no jobs and Safeway hires a manager with no clue... and workers that don't care at all.. (except one guy, I'll give credit to one guy who actually tried to figure out what tapioca was) I understand now why people think this Safeway is terrible and go to Piazza's instead...

Since the pandemic, service has been inconsistent. At the beginning of pandemic, no bags allowed. Safeway provided bags free of charge. Then all of a sudden, without warning, charge bags. You can bring own bags but have to bag groceries yourself. Then, bag person wore gloves and bag groceries for you. Today, I have to bag my groceries again. Change policy all the time. No service at all. At Piazza, they still give free paper bags and bag groceries for you. Guess where am I going grocery shopping from now on?
