This hotel shouldn’t classify as a four star hotel, because it’s not. The staff is nice, and the location is fine but the building and rooms are extremely outdated. The hallways and room smell like pet litter, carpets and rooms are dirty and run down, and the rooms also feel very claustrophobic. Layout of hotel is strange where for some rooms you have to take multiple elevators. Overall the experience feels like a motel.

This was our first time at this property and we will definitely return. The hotel is beautiful and the location is perfect. The rooms were cute and clean, beds were comfy. Just a short walk to the beach across the street. The staff were so incredibly friendly and helpful. Peter and Jackie at the front desk were great. We also forgot a few really important items after checkout. When I called to see if they’d found them they went and checked the room while I was on the line. We were so thankful they found them, and helped me get the items shipped back to us. I haven’t experienced this level of kindness and good service at a hotel in a really long time. Thanks for making our short stay in Santa Barbara so lovely.Safety: Felt very safe on and off propertyWalkability: Directly across the street from the beach, super close to State Street

Things started off poorly for us. The original room was small, dark, and had a list of things wrong with it. The front desk staff did a great job of rectifying it and moved us to another room. The rest of the stay was exceptional. Great location on the beach, good service and food at the restaurants. We always were able to find street parking to avoid valet.Rooms: Try to get a room in the main building.Nearby activities: Across the street from the beach.Safety: Felt very safe on and outside of property.Walkability: Can walk to other resorts and the beach.Food & drinks: Restaurants are pricy, but no more so than any other restaurants in Santa Barbara.

I had a terrible experience with the front desk lady on Friday evening 11/17 but I was lucky to have a completely different and amazing costumer experience with Danielle who was at the front desk on Saturday and Sunday. Danielle really changed the hotel experience for me and that’s why I think with a good and attentive person such as her in the front desk things change and I’m giving this hotel 5 stars. The location is wonderful by the Ocean and the breakfast is great! They also lend their bikes for free and there is a gorgeous bike path in front of the hotel.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Mar Monte. Directly across from the beach, the hotel offers stunning views, historic charm, and warm service. My room was spotless, and I loved the all the Spanish-inspired details. The resort also had beautiful public spaces, notably their main outdoor patio that had firepits at night. This will my new go-to place to stay in Santa Barbara.

I have no idea why there are so many poor reviews for this place. First of all, the pool, fireplace lounge, and balconies (huge) are Top Notch. David was so wonderful, he upgraded us for our anniversary, we stayed in building two with ocean balcony..their gym is great, you can rent cute cruisers, they gave us champagne and macaroons.. the whole vibes is fantastic. Everyone was friendly.. my only issue the food sucked and the bartender on Sunday night was kind of knob. He wasn’t very friendly, seemed super distracted and wouldn’t stop talking to his buddies at the bar to take our order. Highly recommend this place otherwise. We’ll definitely be back. Thanks David!

Great Location but Unpleasant Room ExperienceI recently stayed at Mar Monte Hotel and while the location was fantastic, my overall experience was marred by several issues that made my stay less than pleasant.Firstly, the location of the hotel was excellent, offering easy access to the beach and downtown Santa Barbara. Unfortunately, this was one of the few highlights of our stay. The most significant problem was the unpleasant stench in our room. Despite the apparent cleanliness of the space, there was a persistent odor that made our stay uncomfortable. It was disappointing to encounter this issue, and it significantly impacted our enjoyment of the room.Furthermore, our room was located next to a handicap door, which posed its own set of problems. The door emitted a high-pitched sound each time it closed, which could be heard inside our room. This constant noise made it difficult to relax and get a good night's sleep. Additionally, our room was situated next to the staircase, and every time someone used the stairs, we were subjected to loud, echoing footsteps. These noises, both from the door and the stairs, kept us awake at night, and we struggled to find the restful sleep we had hoped for during our stay.Regrettably, the combination of these issues made our stay far from comfortable, and we did not have the pleasant experience we had anticipated. It was disappointing that these issues were not addressed, as it would have greatly improved our stay. While I would like to commend the hotel's location, I hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and addresses the room-related issues to ensure a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for future guests.

After what could have easily been called a holiday from hell on our tour of California, Arizona and Nevada, we needed to recover and had chosen Santa Barbara before returning to Australia.Santa Barbara would have been a disaster too, but we had luck to meet Dedo Dixon, a warm and kind man with exceptional customer service and a real wish to help. After weeks of facing indifferent reception staff in various hotels, people without knowledge and pride in their job, clueless young girls who didn't know anything about the hotels they work for or unpleasant and almost aggressive attitudes of the older staff, Dedo was a surprise that changed the end of our trip and made it ok.This was my first trip to America, with no expectations, but I am returning to Australia dissapointed equally in the country and its people. You need more people like Dedo everywhere: at the airports, in hotels, in shopping centres, on the public transport (train, busses) because they are the first contact/impression we all get when we arrive and without Dedo it is a rather bleak picture.Regards,Vesna Kostic

Re: DEDO DIXON SERVICE.Dear Mr Finney and all concerned,After what I can only describe as a traumatic trip through the west coast, I had the great fortune to meet Dedo Dixon.I won't go into the details but suffice to say the ONLY genuine, pleasant, professional and kind customer service experience I had on this journey was my interaction with Mr Dixon at the Mar Monte Hotel. All through the west coast I have encountered unprofessional, disinterested and casually rude hospitality staff. The America I have seen now (after a decade away) is not the country I remember. All that seems to be left of the country I remember is reduced to hashtags, catch phrases, sound bites and excellent advertising but there is no substance.Mr Dixon has substance. He exhibits a genuine care for his clients and his role. He is a true credit to your organisation and deserves to be acknowledged as such for the value he brings to your business in his presentation and manner.I doubt I shall ever grace your shores again but my final time spent in Santa Barbara was a reprieve and a needed rest; solely due to the actions and care of Mr Dixon for myself and my mother.Kind RegardsTeodora Randjelovic

I should have taken a look at the reviews before booking our stay here. Unfortunately, we had a similar experience to others. While the location is good and the staff do their best to make it a nice experience, the property itself is extremely neglected. Clearly the owners have been deferring maintenance for many years. We booked a luxury suite with living room, kitchenette and veranda with a view of the ocean. The rooms are old, unmaintained (with scrapes on all the walls and furniture) and barely cleaned. Sheets and blankets are worn/shabby/frayed. The carpets and furniture all need a deep cleaning. The veranda was dirty as well, and the furniture was so dirty, with bird droppings, etc. that they were unusable. The kitchenette was not set up to use - no plates, no microwave, etc.I cannot recommend this facility - and strongly suggest that some of the motels near by will provide a better and much cleaner experience.Rooms: Very neglected and dirty.
