Considering San Marcos Self Storage for your valuables? Think again. San Marcos appears to have a serious RAT problem. Despite spending hundreds of dollars a month for 'safe,' 'secure' storage, you wind up with neither. RATS are running uncontrolled through the facility. They will pee and poop on your stuff while chewing through cardboard containers to find nesting materials. The facility owners (MTM Development Corp 805.963.0358) truly show little interest in fixing the problem. We have invited the county to bring their experts in and yet, despite their recommendations, San Marcos is still running business the same old way. According to another review there was a RAT problem six years ago. We also met a guy who had similar pest issues but was hesitant to speak up because of his lack of American papers. Seems like nothing has changed. The storage facility managers want us to risk contracting hantavirus by moving everything outside so that they can clean the unit(s). Hantavirus (which has symptoms like Covid) is more easily transmitted when you stir things up. Will they be suited up with Tyvek and respirators? What about us? Will they pay for our expenses? Should we become ill from moving our valuables for them to clean up the rat infestation. When we asked them to remove our items and clean up the mess, they said they will not do that. We will have to do it, and then they will sanitize the units. Just how much work are we expected to do with two large storage units? Why are we paying rent when their place is a mess? I have personally caught several RATS in our two containers that are some distance apart. That itself tells me that the whole place is infested. At rare times they set traps in the hallways. If you haven't seen the traps it's because they don't want to advertise there is a RAT problem. Be sure to ask about a RAT problem if you decide to rent here. If they're not going to take any responsibility for their RAT negligence, they should put a clause in their contract saying "we will not reimburse you for the RATS on our property doing damage to your valuables." (That's called full disclosure, which is not done) Set aside money for 'RAT damage insurance,' if there even is that type of insurance for your stored valuables. By far the worst customer service experience from management here. If you're looking for a storage facility in the Santa Barbara area I would look anywhere else than this place.-10/10

The process was easy to get the truck, but we were late bringing it back. I called the office and the man I spoke to was very understanding and decided not to charge us for the late fee! Excellent customer service, can’t recommend San Marcos Self Storage enough.

They were helpful on one occasion by being available to let me move in when they were closed for the day, but everything else with these people is beyond a hassle - it’s also fraud. I rented there for over a year and they literally defrauded me of a month’s rent and then proceeded to tell me that it was because I filed a dispute on my card for this charge. Maybe it’s a wake-up call, but that is the purpose of filing a dispute - when a business does not refund you, the bank arbitrates on the customer’s behalf. I moved out of my unit and confirmed that I was moved out on the third of the month. Then, they did not refund me for that month’s rent at all, and proceeded to tell me that they *had* in fact refunded me. They are simply running a scammy business.\nThe units are infested with rodents, and rodent poop and urine ruined a lot of my things. My nice mattress now smells like rodent urine. I had to get rid of a box spring since it had rodent poop all over it. They set a single trap, and over the phone told me they had rodents because they are “by a creek.” This is literally the most disengaged customer service that I have ever had.\nNo one there answers the phone. They have one employee that works at a time usually. They only call back at their convenience, which is obviously a hassle.\nThey have changed credit card systems twice, so the month that I set up auto-pay, I had to set it up again the next month, and again, only after receiving the accidental email that I needed to pay late fees. The websites for monthly payments look make-shift, and are not part of an official website. I have gotten locked inside the gates because my 'rental agreement' was not signed, and keeping form, they would not answer the phone to let me out of the property (!) They do not communicate electronically, so customers have to be there in-person to sign documents, but sometimes the office is locked during regular business hours since there is only one employee who does all the Uhaul r

Phil and the guys here are the best, I rented a uHaul and tow dolly from them and they helped me set it up and test it out. They put in much more effort and care than the uHaul store down the street, definitely rent from them!

The staff are friendly, approachable and helpful. They had a unit when nobody else did and their rates are the best I've ever seen. I would go back.

Don't waste your time. They never answer the phone, renting a uhaul from them is impossible. Don't own a business if you aren't going to do the customer service part of things.
