About Serra Shop

Serra Shop is a historic site located in Santa Barbara with a rich history dating back to its founding in December 1786 by Padre Lasuen. The mission sits on higher ground, offering views of the Pacific Ocean, even as the surrounding houses have been built up around it. Visitors can explore the exterior gardens for free, including a pollinator garden filled with native plants and flowers, which is recognized as an official Monarch Waystation. In this garden, visitors might spot Monarch butterflies. Nearby, a circular walking path with columns depicts Holy Week events through colorful tiled mosaics, adding to the spiritual atmosphere. The mission features well-preserved architecture, a church, museum, and cemetery, all maintained with care. The grounds include historic features such as a Moorish fountain and laundry basin built in the early 19th century. The basin, originally used by the Chumash for laundry, is notable for carvings like a mountain lion head, one of the oldest sculptures surviving in California. Although the fountain and basin are fenced off for protection, they remain impressive reminders of the mission’s history. Visitors often find the experience enriching, with some noting that it offers more history and value compared to other missions in the area. Entry fees are around $17 per person, with free parking available. The site is wheelchair accessible in parts, making it convenient for families. Overall, Serra Shop provides a meaningful glimpse into California’s early history, blending beautiful architecture, scenic views, and fascinating stories that bring the past to life. Visitors are encouraged to spend at least an hour exploring this historic and scenic location.
