Th worst place ever for medically fragile. upper management was horrendous. Care given to my son ?? he was left sitting in wet diapers 8 hours a day and got a pressure sore. by the time his bus arrived at my home in the p.m.s there was pee dripping in the bus from his soaked 3 diapers. They left him in his wheelchair all day long and said they didnt have any mats or beanbag chairs available for him so he could get out of his chair. They actually complained to me that he went to the bathroom too much and they didn't have the staff to change him.I was completely disgusted with this place and wonder why they're still in business.each day they would call to complain about something to the point I would cringe when the phone rang. they wanted a pill cut into quarters for him and the only place they said could do it was the pharmacy. the pharmacy thought it was a joke. I felt harassed.one morning my husband was to put Jake on the bus. while waiting for the bus my dogs got into the chicken coop. My husband left our son in our living room in his wheelchair. Son got out of the wheelchair, knee walked to the screen door and pushed it open. His driver made several reports that day and said that my son was outside alone. I got several concerned calls from BI about our poor standard of care and I'm sure they considered calling APS. However, my son was in a fenced and locked gated front yard. Apparently they were ignoring that fact. He is allowed to go outside, that's why our front gate has a lock on it. Dad was able to rescue the chickens from our dogs, it took him 4 minutes.Don't put your loved ones here. It was constant daily harassment. My son gets great care and lives in a nice home, he is the center of our lives and we've never had a problem concerning his care in 33 years.I can't believe how badly BI treated our family, like we were a joke To them.No thanks!

My sister. who is severely handicapped, has gone to BI since its inception over 40 years ago. She loves going there and if anyone is not good to her she would let me know. It makes her heart sing. She looks forward to going back when in-person services are available. I emphasize with the parents who have written the other reviews who feel that that their children are not getting what they would hope post their school system experience. As a former high-up school system administrator, please understand the BI gets about 25% of the revenue to serve you child that the schools receive. BI's employees don't have the salary, benefits, retirement system of the schools so BI cannot retain them in the same way. This is not to say that you should not want your child to flourish as an adult. But there is only so much BI can be expected to do under the circumstances. I think that BI is fundamentally a good organization and hope that you, like me, will donate to it. It is the best option available that I know of in the market it serves.

My sister Linda Romero started at BI since the first day they opened. We love BI she has been in all the programs they have to offer. The staff can't be anymore wonderful to the clients. They are so helpful and so good. So happy with the program. I just hope they continue and dont close the doors!!! Their the best for all disabled people!!

My daughter was supported by Sonoma County Office of Education with het special ed up until age 22. They did a terrific job of providing a safe, consistent program. After she aged out, BI was recommended and, when we toured, we thought it would be a good fit. It is not. Despite providing information on strategies that work best for my daughter, they ignored all of it. There is no consistency in their routine, the staff, or even the client groups in which she is placed from day to day. I've offered to help set up schedules, provide adaptive equipment, etc. There is no real follow up on their part and it is very difficult to get in contact with their Life Skills Director. Our NBRC worker has been attempting to call the director for quite some time now. They are incapable of dealing with an individual's unique needs. Their program is way too big to provide the specialized services that this at risk population needs. Whenever I visit, I find special needs clients wandering the hallways unattended. They may have once been the gold standard for this type of program, but that just isn't true anymore. Please avoid this program at all costs.

My son's assessment was well done by one individual (no longer works there) and appropriate recommendations made. This positive experience meant we hired them for supported living and job development/support functions at a later date; both were a disaster. We tried to make it work for four years, but low quality staff and high turnover resulted in near constant lapses and chaos. This company does not support their clients as individuals. Rather, it's a cookie cutter approach that works best for the company.

Becoming Independent cares about each participant being served there and all their needs no matter how great the need is. As staff, I’ve never been treated so well ( ever). Truly the happiest place in the word.
