Came here on a whim...we were visiting from Hawaii. We were staying in downtown SF at the Palace Hotel and walked to the Ferry building. While there, we saw the ferry and said to each other, "eh, let's go take a trip to Sausalito!" We found our way to Scrimshaw Gallery, which was a short walk from the port, just off the main strip. Good looking woodworks from local artisans. Not sure why all the reviews of the grumpy dude with the mustache, but Mike was pleasant and helpful. He was quiet at first, I'm sure just exhausted from the many looky-loos filtering through the shop. Mike was more than happy to share the history of the pieces in the store. There were tons of bowls and great looking, well-made wooden boxes with handsome inlays. In particular there was a bowl, small, really nice markings and designs from the natural wood, that I was interested in. Mike explained the history of it, how it was made and how the unusual naturally burnt rim of the bowl came to be. I was sold! One big problem I had was hand carrying it home...but Mike offered to ship it...for FREE! Of course, I was weary about that because I wasn't sure if it would be intact when I received it...and I really loved this one of a kind piece. After all, it was hand turned from a local artisan who has since retired! But I trusted Mike and agreed to having it shipped (and THANKED him for doing it complimentarily!). I received it in the mail yesterday...fully bubble wrapped in a box...in PERFECT condition! Much Mahalo, Mike!

Beautiful maritime artwork with paintings and prints, scrimshaw and wood art work. Well appointed and high quality. Friendly and welcoming staff. The art in the window seemed to invite me in. A hidden gem that is off the main street.

We were last here in 2010 and have regretted not purchasing a necklace made from mammoth ivory for my wife ever since. Still didn't get the necklace today but I scored a very beautiful titanium and carbon fibre handmade money clip. Changes to Californian law about the sale of artefacts made from ivory (even long extinct mammals like a mammoth) has reduced the items on display but an online store is available. A very personable owner and the store also has timber items made by local artists and they are simply beautiful as well. Do yourself a favour and drop in if you are in Sausalito. It's a long way from Australia but we are glad we returned today.

Scrimshaw Gallery is what I consider to be the 'premier gallery' Nautical Art Gallery in Sausalito, possibly anywhere. I used to sell my bronze sculptures to the owner years ago..and sold many bronze sculptures here! The Gallery owner - is a true gallery owner and a straight shooter. His gallery features some amazing nautical painters, sculptors and an astonishing collection of scrimshaw and custom knife makers from around the globe! I highly recommend stopping in The Scrimshaw Gallery while visiting Sausalito....

it is not often that one finds a gallery that has so much quality goods to offer at really quite reasonable prices. Very nice scrimshaw pieces (knives, money clips and pens), artwork and woodwork.the people we dealt with in the gallery were very pleasant and knowledgeable.

The map in the window caught my eye.... but as I strolled in and saw the largest collection of William Henry knives I have ever seen amassed in one place. What an amazing collection. Nice prints and map collection as well. Will be checking the web site from time to time.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Mike (the owner) over the phone, as I had seen something on his website that I wondered if I could find in the store in Sausalito. He was charming, genuine, honest, and extremely knowledgeable about the history and regulation of ivory...I learned a lot in one simple phone call! I will certainly plan to visit his store in the future, though as a local I might try for off-tourist season. ;-)

Great little Sausalito gallery! I used to sell my bronze sculptures to the owner Mike Attaway for at least a decade. Great location with unique hard to find ship paintings, scrimshaw knives, and bronze sculptures. I think they still have some of my old past line of work there. If you are in Sausalito go check them out!
