“I'm up here in Tahoe City for a few days, escaping the heat of Red Bluff in the Sacramento Valley where it's gonna be 110F or so for the next week! Here at the Lake it's around 25 degrees cooler so still hot but tolerable. It was mid morning and my friend and I came up with this idea for fried chicken for lunch and wonderng where in Tahoe City was a good place for fried chicken. Well, I see there's a Save Mart here in Tahoe City and I know the deli has some tasty fried chicken! Just happens this weekend, the 8 piece chicken order is $2.00 off on sale for $7.99. Walking up to the deli, it's still 10am 'ish but the chicken is out already. Nice ... and this batch is not overly cooked dark. I like a golden color but on the lighter side so the batter is not all over cooked. Bagged and off we go. They do charge tax on the ready to eat chicken. Back at his house, he tells me , he's heard or read, chicken with gravy is all the rage ... you know like truffle everything? He pulls out these little bags of gravy he froze from this Basque place down in Carson City. Heated in the microwave for 60 seconds and we got gravy. OK, so I love Save Mart chicken, but after dripping that gravy all over the pieces .... wow holy OMFG! was that good! The fresh fried chicken was so tender you teeth just went right through the meat and crunchy batter and then that gravy flavor kicks in and , just wow. So, get over to Save Mart and get some chicken. Gotta eat when it still warm from the deli. Re Heating seems to make it not as tender. If you have some gravy all the better! This is a real nice Save Mart, well, as far as Save Marts go anyways.”
