For being in such an uppity area you'd expect quality food and superior customer service but that is not what you get. For the most part the produce was decent but the pack of sliced pepper Jack we bought was wet, soggy and smelled so bad we had to toss it. The salads in the deli counter were all discolored and looked dried out. They were out of fresh chicken breasts so we couldn't get their 2 person hot meal deal and this was at 2pm, so not like we came last minute. All of the fresh bread felt hard as a rock. Lots of the meats looks off in color and we're marked down. Just overall pretty bad. And because of the location, prices here are high so definitely not the quality you'd expect. Customer service was also lacking. The lady in front of us forgot something so she told the cashier to void her transaction and ring us up while she went back for what she needed. The cashier rang up all our items (27 items) and then realized she didn't void the previous transaction so we were about to pay for our groceries and the lady that was in front of us. Instead of voiding out the 5 items that belonged to the other lady, she took her sweet time and voided out all 27 of our items, then let the lady come all the way back up to the front of the line and pay for her stuff. At this point there was a huge line of pissed off people. Not to mention I had bagged my own groceries because no one came to help and now we had to unbag everything to be rang up again. A 30 minute grocery trip turned into an hour plus headache. Thankfully I'm not from this area and I never have to set foot in here again. If I was a local tho, I'd probably make the drive to Truckee to avoid this place since the SaveMart down the street closed.

Produce is pretty good except for very old broccoli in both organic and regular sections. My poor review is about checking out. There's only one lane open whenever I go and the checker is the unfriendliest person in the store. She will not bag the groceries but either waits for another employee to do it or the customers themselves. When I was just there was a very old man waited for some help and she ignored him. She's incapable for smiling.

I could honestly see many folks giving this Safeway one star, but I'm giving it four and I'll two you why: service under pressure. This place gets absolutely bombarded with folks, both tourists and locals all times of the year. It isn't uncommon to struggle to find a parking space, and the lines can become exceedingly long. While I know this can be very frustrating, you also have to understand how hard the people in this store are working to keep everything up and running.

Make sure you check dates. Horrible store! They don't care about their customers. I've been in there four times and got expired items every time. My bad for not checking. Shouldn't have to though. A lot of the staff is nice, but management don't seem to be doing their job. The last straw was,I just went to eat A Twix I just bought yesterday, and it expired four months ago. Joke!!!

Small crowded and unkept. No associate seemed friendly. Made eye contact and looked away. Not being regular myself and looking like I am looking for something,no associate seemed interested in help me at 930 on a Tuesday. Found everything on my own by the way.

This Safeway is amazing as well as the entire staff. This location has ALWAYS had a staffing problem, nobody can afford to live here nor can they afford to commute. The employees here all work 6-7 days a week and do their very best to make sure the shopping experience is a great one. Yes, lines get long, some items you need may be out on the shelf, you may or may not find a random expired item, BUT this store is great! The variety of alcohol and produce is outstanding, and they treat you like family. I love my Tahoe City Safeway

Definitely Not like my hometown Safeway. expired stuff on the shelf including steaks that looked like they've been left in the refrigerator shelf for too long. Still managed to find some cut up meat for dinner and made something quick and easy.

The staff at Safeway is the most professional and friendly people there are... But, my greatest experience is in the produce department. The staff, especially Rich and Craig, are extremely attentive and helpful. The produce always looks as fresh as a farmer's market. Their organic section is the best around the lake. I really value my shopping experience at Safeway in Tahoe City...

Place blows! Some b******* manager took over my breakfast burrito order and decided to make my order with her breakfast/lunch, which consisted of putting her gloved hand in the guacamole and after using her guacamole hand she made our burritos, adding unwanted guacamole from her unchanged glove. So close to telling her fo stop! And after she gave me the burritos I could hear her yelling to the cashier: "did he pay for 2?, did he pay for 2??" Talk about slime bags!! She obviously has to get a new job because she sucks at the easiest job ever. Im surprised she didn't look me in the face and spit in my food. She pretty much did. Never going back!! Guacamole hands! Idiot

I would like to the thank staffs in Safeway at 850 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, for keeping the store open on Thanksgiving Day. There was a long list of stores and restaurants closed on that day, including Subway. Besides, it's very nice to have a panic area behind the store. The staff at Safeway is always friendly and helpful. They work extremely hard to to provide services and always smile. Sadly, we do have some people who visit and are........you can fill in what you want. The last year and a half has brought on many new challenges in every aspect of life. Unfortunately, some people have not been paying attention the news. I say this as a full time professional, who commutes regularly, has a staff, education and small children. I thoroughly respect every individual who is going to work in the public sector. In my book you are all saints and I can not thank you enough!!!!

Every time we come here, there are only two check outs open and it takes about 20 minutes just to get through the check out line. This is so ridiculous!!! I thought it was a fluke the first time, but after trip #3, it's the same thing! Also, the manager just stands there watching everyone, open another check out!!! I'd rather drive further to another grocery store, this is nuts. So this Safeway officially lost my business. I'd recommend driving a little further to a different place.

The Safeway in the heart of Tahoe City, CA has terrible customer service. We stood in a check out line for 10-15 minutes and when we finally made it to the checker is said "I am going to shut this check out line down after this customer so you should go to self check out". We don't like using self check and told him he said that is our only option. We told him if we were going to have to go to self check why didn't he tell us that instead of having us wait in the line!
