Ellos hablan español I have an old Datsun 521 so finding reliable mechanics who can help is a struggle. My regular mechanic, B & G Auto Tech let me know the radiator had a leak and to take it to a radiator specialist shop near me to repair. I found D&R on Yelp, they were on my route home from Gardena, so I called because of the previous review. They answered quickly and said to bring it in to have a look. This is a corner strip with three different auto mechanic specialty places: tire, smog check and radiators (good to know for next time). I met with Rudy, he was really kind and let me know what to get from Auto Zone for him to fix: radiator fan ties & a gallon of coolant. He mentioned it might be 2-hrs to fix and quoted me a price I was happy with. When I returned he got to work. So I had topped off the coolant before I headed back to the shop. They informed that's a big 'no no' because it needs space to expand when heated. What that had done though was make it obvious the reservoir drain was simply dumping out to the top of the radiator. He showed me at what level the coolant needs to stay at, about 2" below the opening. This is a real grease head type of shop, the waiting area is in the garage, so if you fancy wearing white clothes, you might want to go elsewhere. I'm glad I stayed because the paletas man came by and Rudy got me one (90+ degree day). After doing the pressure test, he informed me what my other mechanic had mentioned (there's a hairline crack in the top seam), also that the radiator has a reservoir drain but nothing to drain to (also helping to loose pressure), and that they don't list the top piece any more in his order catalogs. What he had on hand was good in width but not in length. I quickly did a web search, found a new reservoir but it would have to ship from Thailand, and a new radiator would be made out of aluminum. When I shared my results, this got Rudy thinking and he was anti the aluminum. I asked if he could weld the crack shut but he didn't want to take heat to it. He mentioned using JB Weld to seal it and proceeded to clean the affected area with a steal brush and shared instructions on how to properly patch: cool engine, clean area with rubbing alcohol and seal with JB. For the reservoir he MacGyver'd a solution with a plastic Gatorade bottle, tubing and fasteners. This will give me time to properly search for an adequate 521 radiator and save up to buy it (just part of the process when you have an old car). When I find it, I'll definitely bring them back to Rudy at D & R Radiators to install. I'm definitely keeping the Gatorade bottle as is. PS: This is my ratsun forum style review for other Datsun lovers nearby who might be in a similar situation.
