This is a must see. If you like history or like old forts you have to see this place. It is the best recreation of an old ort that I have ever seen. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The fort is fitted out just like it would have been when it was in operation. It is 100% authentically recreated from notes taken by an army lieutenant who spent some time there and took exact measurements and wrote detailed descriptions. 100% authentic, you have to see it!My only suggestion would be that they put some benches or chairs around the courtyard so that you could sit and immerse yourself in the experience. Again this is an absolute must see.

Peace was good business practice. The Bents and St. Vrain managed to create a vibrant secure prosperous location at the crossroads of history and nations in the mid-19th century. It’s worth a couple hours if your time to wander over to the old fort by the river and learn how. This carefully and beautifully recreated location (hard to believe it was reconstructed in about two years from plans sketched in the 1840s) is staffed by friendly knowledgeable Rangers in period attire. Wander through the fort and see how comfortable it would have been to weary emigrants, appreciated by merchants and traders, and trusted by the neighboring tribes.Easy 1/4-mile walk (level for wheel chairs), don’t forget your pass, and be sure to check out the book store with its extensive/impressive collection of historical works, crafts, gifts and a couple of friendly kitties.

Great recreation of the old fort, reminds me of a John Wayne movie set. Lots of replicas and artifacts from days gone by. 1/4 mile east walk into the fort area. Free entry with national park pass. Dogs are allowed in certain areas.

Excellent place to stop! Brings the history books to life. Travelers should consider visiting a few more local places to add to the experience.1.) Sand Creek Massacre National monument2.) Boggsville National historical site-original graveyard of Kit Carson.Makes for a great weekend of activities.Advice- Bring water to stay hydrated, and good shoes. My flip flops were not a good choice today. Very sandy in places.

Was a very interesting experience. Was amazing how they were able to recreate it. They did a fabulous job. We really enjoyed walking thru it. Definitely a must stop place. There are picnic tables by the parking lot along with restrooms and there are restrooms in.the fort

Drove 2.5 hours to see this place and feel it was worth it!! I took the self guided tour, which enabled me to walk around at my own pace. I encourage you to watch the 17-minute video. Very informative. It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, even if you are parked in handicapped parking.
