“La Veta Inn — Historic, Quiet, and Definitely a One-Night Kind of Place

La Veta Inn has a lot going for it if you know what to expect. It’s a historic hotel dating back practically to Colorado itself, with ties to the railroad and plenty of local history. We were also informed by locals that the hotel is haunted, which, considering the kind of road trip we were on, was obviously a bonus.

The location is great. It sits just behind the little downtown shopping area, so you can park and wander around easily. The shops are mostly your typical tourist-town assortment with a healthy dose of hippies mixed in—which honestly made it more fun. The hotel courtyard is also really nice and probably one of my favorite parts of the property.

There are a few things I wish we had known beforehand.

The hotel advertises an on-site bar and fine dining, but both have apparently been closed for about two years. I completely understand that a small historic hotel may not get enough traffic to keep a restaurant and bar operating year-round, especially during slower times. My issue isn’t that they’re closed; it’s that they’re still advertised. Had we known ahead of time, we simply would have planned differently.

Our room did have air conditioning, but there was no way for us to regulate the temperature, which was a little strange.

The hotel also appears to operate primarily through a slip of paper with a phone number to call if you need someone. 😂 This actually didn’t bother us. We were there on a Sunday night and I think we may have been one of only two occupied rooms, so having someone sitting at a front desk all night would have been ridiculous. More importantly, when we did call, the staff member arrived within about two minutes. He was extremely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable about the history of the hotel. So while the setup is unusual, the service we received when we actually needed someone was great.

Overall, La Veta Inn makes sense as part of a road trip rather than as the destination itself. Go see the wall, wander through the shops for a little while, have dinner at the country club steakhouse—which was great—come back, enjoy the historic hotel, sleep, and hit the road the next morning.

Unless there’s an event happening in town that you’re specifically coming for, I personally wouldn’t plan an entire weekend around staying here. But as a historic overnight stop in a tiny Colorado town, it absolutely has charm.

And apparently ghosts.

“We stayed at Sammie’s for a few months and it’s has been one of my favorite parks we have stayed at! The owner Sandra is very kind and accommodating, and the park is close enough to walk into town for anything you need! The washer and dryer works very well! Very dog friendly park and surrounding area with many trails to walk your pup without a leash! The park is clean and quiet, we very much so enjoyed staying here and would recommend to anyone looking for a place to park their camper or tent camp in La Veta!”
