This discount store has approximately 19,000 stores in the US and Mexico. It is headquartered in Tennessee and founded in 1939 as JL Turner and Son. They had a name change to Dollar General since 1955.
Dollar General sells a wide variety of items such as home decor, clothing, cleaning supplies, and many more. This store in Barkhamstead is very similar like the other stores. It is well stocked and for the most part, organized. What I noticed in most DGs, there are always items waiting to be stocked on the end of aisles.
This one was pretty busy on the day we went because it was the Sunday before Christmas; I assume people were doing last minute shopping like we were doing too. They had many seasonal items and prices were affordable, as their name holds a reputation for that. This is also the first DG that I've seen two cashiers working; I think because there was a long line. Overall, a standard DG with discounted items. It's definitely a popular store and I understand why.

I’m only giving it 2 stars because the place is a disaster. The staff was very kind, though. You can most definitely tell they are understaffed. There are many many items needing to be put on the shelves still, and it’s even completely blocking one of the aisles. It’s very tight in there, and a bit of a fire hazard. The staff, the 2 of them I saw, were working hard to get the items on shelves. I was barely able to find what I was looking for, but I did.

The people at this store are just plain rude. They hate everyone except themselves. Meaning every other color.

This is the worst DG ever. Yes, they have everything I need, but they are so rude, especially the elderly man behind the counter. I get it that you want to go home. but SIR, you get paid to stand behind that counter and be courteous to customers. I will be shopping online from now.

I went in store to speak with a manager. The manager I spoke to was extremely rude, and outright lied to me and was as insisted that I was a liar myself. I will never return here and recommend to everyone to go somewhere else.

He was very rude they took all my money off my card and when i brung it to his attention he argued with me and called the cops on me and lied...He knew he was wrong for what his employer did...And never fixed it just made it worse...

For the past 3 weeks I'll do an order online for store pickup and my order gets cancelled! They claim it's a glitch but don't see anything being done about it. When calling the store it just rings and rings. No one answers and I know I'm calling the right number. Prices on shelves don't match what rings up at register as well. Over the summer I purchased Oxi Clean in the tub and the price on the shelf was $5.75 and it rang up at the register for $6.00 . Went 2 weeks ago and it still wasn't fixed .

Went to many stores to get the $6 deal on toasters and coffee pots to donate. So many stores are a mess and no stock. Went to the store in Barkhamsted, Ct and they were helpful, had stock and a clean store!

This store is pretty well organized, and with lots of merchandise choices! This store has very reasonable prices compared to the much bigger stores. It is also a very quiet store if you prefer something less crowdedThe overall atmosphere to me is rather bland, to the point where I feel claustrophobic. I have tried many of Dollar General's store brand foods and drinks, many I have found to be disappointing, but good enough in a pinch. However, the clothes are actually decent, excellent prices and quality on home goods, and a good selection of health & personal care items too!This is a terrific store to go to if you're on a budget, which is why I'm thankful for this store. However, don't expect anything too fancy, but what you might absolutely need will most likely be found here!

FALSE ADVERTISING! The balloons were marked at $2.50. They were filled with helium and marked in the floating bin at $2.50. When I get to the register he jacks the price up to $5.00! He's a gouger, watch out for this permittee. He said it was because of the helium, I said put a note under the $2.50 sign that says - "$5.00 with helium".

This manager is so rude. refused to sell me a cart full of merchandise. He literally blocked me and told me corporate will close his store down. Contacted corporate who said there is no manager by that name there. Next time I went to the store he again refused to sell to me saying they were not sellable. Umm per policy if it's on the shelf you legally have to sell it. never going again to this store
