Skungamaug River Golf Club is a classic, quirky New England track and a hidden gem of a course. It is an 18-hole public course that is a fun place to play. The layout is challenging, requiring players to hit every club in the bag. Its short length is combined with many tree-lined fairways and dime-sized greens, creating risk-reward options all over. Trying to overpower the course with distance will get players in trouble. The course is well-kept, with greens in good condition, though it can get soggy in spots due to its location. It held up well considering rain. The club has a fantastic little beer tavern and a friendly staff and pro who accommodate short-notice tee times. The bartenders are friendly, and the drinks are very cheap. The ambience is exquisite. The driving range is full grass, which can be good or bad. It would be nice to have a mat area for those who do not play often. It is a solid course with some really "weird" holes. The experience is better than catching a baseball at Fenway Park on a Sunday afternoon, with scenic and challenging holes. It is a definite bucket-list course where players will want to bring plenty of golf balls and a change of socks.

Solid course but a bit short. Considering the rain, held up well. Higher rating if it did not have some really "weird" holes.
