I made an appointment to ensure my recently adopted, four year old Golden Retriever, Chance, was established with a local vet. Companion Animal Hospital was recommended by my sister. The visit was very thorough - no vaccinations were needed as he is current, but he was tested for heartworm (negative!), and they performed a fecal test (also negative). Chance is now on heartworm meds as well as an allergy/itch medicine which has helped so much. The appointment took about an hour due to the thoroughness of the tech as well as the Vet. It was a bit pricey, but its been a few years since we needed a Vet, and bottom line, Chance is worth it!

These guys are awesome. They take the time to listen to you, even when they are behind and dealing with emergencies. I am never rushed out, and they always answer all my questions.

I wish that I didn't have to write this - the veterinary field is an incredibly tough one at the best of times and with the complications from Covid and rise in pet ownership, I'm sure it hasn't gotten easier. Companion Animal Hospital has been the vets for our dog for about 5 years. She's healthy and active, so we really only see them for annual check ups, vaccinations and boarding. To date, our only issue really has been that you have to play a bit of phone tag to get hold of them. We picked our dog up from two weeks of boarding with them and she looked thin and almost skeletal in spots. We discovered that she had lost 10-13% of her body weight (depending on whose scales that you use and they left her harness on while weighing her) and was definitely a couple of points lower in her body composition score with each rib and hip bones suddenly very prominent. We first brought this to their attention via a phone call. Their only statement was that they checked with their kennel staff and she was fed according to our instructions. We could bring her in for a "more accurate weight" if we wished. When I brought her in today for that weight to be recorded (as well as pick up items they forgot to return to us), I expressed my concerns that no one contacted us with regards to her sudden, large weight loss. I was informed of the following: -Reiterated that their staff followed our feeding instructions. -Suggested that perhaps our dog is less active at home? (She's not, she does regular 5 mile walks and tennis ball runs). -Staff had no response as to why would we would not have been contacted with regards to a loss in weight or body condition. They were asked this twice. -Front staff stated that the kennel staff would only check animals health on the basis of if they ate or not. -Front staff did confirm that at least 10% loss of weight in two weeks was alarming. -We were informed that if we had concerns, we could arrange for an exam. Staff stated that this exam would be entirely at our cost. I pointed out that the reason for this exam was due to her time in their care. Staff reiterated that all fees would be our responsibility. We have previously trusted this vet with the only concerns being some minor communication issues. The gaslighting and lack of accountability to our pet's sudden condition after being left in their care is appalling. Staff did state they would escalate this matter at my request. I have not yet received any call or communication from them. This area of Connecticut has many outstanding veterinary teams. It would definitely be wise to consider them carefully.

I have not yet received any call or communication from them. This area of Connecticut has many outstanding veterinary teams. It would definitely be wise to consider them carefully. Update 1 - The hospital manager reached out via telephone and the call was not productive. She stated that all records pointed out that our dog ate 100% of her diet each day and that she seemed happy and energetic each time the manager walked by. There was no response to why no one noticed such a decline in her body condition score, but she did state that in the future perhaps they should weigh the animals each week. There was a huge attempt to minimize our concern regarding the 10-13% weight loss by first comparing it to her weight from 3-4 years ago (before she was conditioned to take such long walks and runs) and then by attempting to state it was "only a couple of pounds". I pointed out that it was not a "couple of pounds" but a significant weight loss over two weeks solely in their care. I asked if she would normally call a 10-13% weight loss in two weeks healthy to which there was not response. I again asked for their vet to examine our dog who ended up in this condition at their cost. The hospital manager stated she would forward our concerns along on Monday and the call ended with no resolution. Update 2 - Monday has long passed and there is no further phone call. A comment on a google review indicated they were going to look into the matter.

Companion Animal Hospital has the least customer service and or respect for my pets. last year my dog came down with a limo and the medicine they gave almost killed her. when I mentioned it could be the medicine they said there was nonway, ran a bunch of tests to tell me a week later it was the medicine. This year they atrempted to proscribe the same medicine because they never noted her file! Just last week I cLled before my other dog went in for his Lymes vaccine as he was experiencing diarrhea. They vaccinated him anyway as the "exam" or checkup seemed like he was okay. Within 12 hours he was vomiting, diarrhea and lethargic. When I called the vet was not in and I was told to do chicken and rice. I called back when he couldn't hold anything down, not even water and they have no emergency vet. I had tonrush my dog to Ocean State and have heard back from them before this place. i have yet to hear back from anyone there. They also change vets without notice, zero respect for owners and no communication. overpriced and only about making money. It is a disgrace how they treat people. I have a dog that is people selective and having a new vet invade his space and have disregard for his health over money, is sickening.

Only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because some of the staff is nice. This place is way too expensive. In the past they have administered shots without my consent and just surprise charged me with them. They over-price their medical supplies 2.5 times the cost. I.e. what I can get online for 14 dollars they charge me 40 dollars for. I do understand that you have to run a business, but they should understand that not everyone is made of money. They already charge an arm and a leg just for simple tasks. Its preposterous.

You can tell the staff at Companion Animal Hospital really love animals and have a lot of compassion for the human companions. This photo is of my Violet exploring the exam room last month while we waited for Dr. Jensen, and she felt a little more at ease that way. Dr. Jensen and Faun answered all my questions with kindness and good humor while Violet was shaking ear cleaning solution all over them! When I brought her back for dental work, I got a thorough update from Dr. Jen

Companion Animal Hospital was able to catch the heart worm that has gone undiagnosed in my cat for several months. Dr Jensen recommend the test when I suspected he had asthma and I am so incredibly thankful to finally know what’s been causing him so much trouble.

This past Saturday, our 11-year-old dog went to Companion due to difficulty breathing and laying down Friday evening. While at Companion, when my dog had X rays done, there was no radiologist to read them. From 9:40-1:45 they could not find a radiologist. The vet wanted them to be read because what was seen could have been two different diagnoses. He could not stand. He could not eat. We were told to not take him to Ocean State as they would turn us away. According to our text messages with her, she was still trying to find a radiologist at 1:30 and discuss his case and a possible transfer with Ocean State in Rhode Island. However, according to medical records, Dr. Jensesn already made the call and determined diagnosis regardless of not being confident with his X rays. Companion does not have a radiologist on staff, or access to an on-call one to send records to, especially on weekends. This could be detrimental to other pets.Four hours later, Moose died less than 30 minutes after being given a medication. He went from borderline stable beats per minute (we were told we can’t go unless it’s over 80 at rest even though he had to have oxygen while at Companion and the car ride was over 40 minutes) to 96 beats per minute. We couldn’t even get him in the car. He passed away.We have been patients of this veterinarian for over 20 years. We have checked his medical records and while on oxygen, Moose's heart rate was over 120. He was still sent home, with medication, and an emergency vet 40 minutes away. We were given directions of how to proceed and when to take him to Ocean State. In addition, when informed he passed, Dr. Jensen could not spare the five minutes or compassion to call our family because it was her day off. Maybe because she sees death more often in her field, but the lack of compassion has affected our respect and view of Companion Animal Hospital. During grieving, families should be given a call from the vet, especially when seen earlier on the day of their death. I understand she has a day off, and everyone needs time off, but pets are members of people's families. Please reconsider sending your pets here. Your pets deserve compassion, a fighting chance for survival, and your families deserve respect.

Heartless. Refused to put down 18 year old cat because they were too busy. Do not recommend if you love your pet.
