I went here because of a happy accident after getting tickets way too far in advance for the Mark Twain House. Honestly, I ended up enjoying the tour of this house much more than the Mark Twain House (which was also pretty good). The guide, Brenna, was knowledgeable and engaging. She did a great job answering our questions, encouraging our curiosity, and tying Harriet Beecher Stowe's activism to what is going on today. I cannot recommend it enough.

Most visitors pass by this house after touring the Twain mansion next door. Don't pass up a tour of this little gem of a museum! The guides were very knowledgable and they spend a lot more time with you as opposed to the rather rushed tours next door. I loved everything here! You can take photos, ask questions, and really dive into the history of Harriet Beecher Stowe and her writing. You will not regret visiting this place!

I love the guided tour. The guide was responsive and sweet. He let us take pictures and made us sit in a group where we can reflect on Uncle Toms Cabin and Harriet written books. The tour was a reflection on both Harriet’s life , her books and the botanical paintings she has done. It’s a beautiful house. Staff there was extremely nice. We will come again. Best

History can be cruel but we need to learn the truth

This is a modest house, a second house this Block Buster author, probably equivalent to Star Wars of the time, built for herself...yes, this was before women were legally allowed to own her own property in the US! I was surprised at the popularity of Uncle Tom's cabin..you see a room of after effects not only in books and paraphernalia, but on wall paper produced at the time and restaurants being named after it. Our guide was a fantastic woman with a degree is sociology and it came through. She was friendly and open and made our tour interactive. She truly made our tour special. I learned so much about the time Stowe lived in and the Protestant minister father who made her a Catholic! Her 5 brothers all became ministers like their father...the two brothers who did not cut it, committed suicide! I felt immersed in the time while touring.

It's right next to Mark Twain Museum & House. Our tour guide Rodrigo was very helpful and knowledgeable about Harriet Beecher Stowe's social background. You'll get a deep look into America's dark past of slavery.

The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center does an excellent job of brining the work of Stowe to life. While the focus on Stowe's most famous work, Uncle Tom's Cabin, there's consideration to her other works, her notable family, and her larger social situation.

There are house only guided tours. It is possible to register online, which was not possible for me. It might have been my address in Germany. The tours involve visitors. The tours are very informative as far as the social background of HBS is concerned. The house has been extensively restored and is in very good condition.

I found it offensive that the team on hand assumed my comment was racist. I retired in December and my boss and his boss were both African American. When I answered his question, I was actually remembering what a former Democratic Senator of New York, a former presidential candidate and First Lady, told the African American people they needed to do to make a difference and build better futures for them. I also was offended by that boys remark when I quoted former First Lady Laura Bush in her thinking regarding Stowe was not motivated by money, etc. He was insulting and told the group money was definitely a motivator for Stowe. Also, contrary to Abraham Lincoln's comment to her, the male guide responded with, and I quote, "He wasn't even there." It appeared to me there is more of a political agenda your tour organization than Harriett Beecher Stowe.Your response is in direct opposition of your organizations objective. You are clearly stating you only are inclusive etc. As long as one agrees with your viewpoint.

I've been to many historic home tours all over the country and none are quite like the tour of Harriet Beecher Stowe's home. The tour is not just about learning information and seeing historic items, but also becomes a conversation about race relations then and now.My tour had two tour guides. Right from the start at the gift shop they asked everyone's name and what made us decide to visit the home. We are informed that the tour will be more conversational than other tours. Once we enter the actual home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, we are in a room in the home filled with quotes from people like President Obama and President Lincoln regarding Harriet and her famous anti-slavery book Uncle Tom's Cabin. When we finished reading we met the tour guides in the dining room. They asked which quotes did we find most interesting or which quotes may have touched us. That starts off the conversation. This process is continued throughout the tour. Learn about a room in the house, read something of your choice, and then a discussion. I image that some people may not want to discuss the topic of race with strangers, but I had a good small mixed group willing to talk. The tour is not all talk, as you also get to see the actual desk Harriet wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin on.The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center is right next to the more famous Mark Twain House. My tour of that home was packed, and I wished more of the group had come next door to see Harriet's home as well. Although her home may not be as luxurious as Mark Twain's, it's the tour that ends up being more educational and memorable.

I have to be honest. The reason I stopped here is because it is right next door to the Mark Twain Museum and House, which was my main purpose in being here. But, after checking out the Twain Museum, decided to take a tour of the Stowe residence. Again, full disclosure...I haven't read "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or any other writings of Harriet. I knew who she was and what the book was about and it's implications on American history. However, after the guided tour, which is geared to answering the questions of those attending, I have a deeper and more profound respect for Harriet Beecher Stowe. I even purchased a copy of "Uncle Tom's Cabin". I especially liked how the guide connected Stowe's work to what is happening in our society today in the area of racial inequality.I highly recommend this tour for all but especially for families with children and teenagers. The guides really make history come to life and applicable to your own life!

This is a cool bonus at the Mark Twain house. It is on the same property. It is very little. But, a cool piece of history.

Don’t miss this place if you are visiting the Mark Twain home, which is next to it. The information center had a lot of great information and the house is lovely.
