There are two True Value stores at almost equal distances from my house: Killingworth and Country Paint and Hardware in North Branford. Both stores are well-stocked, and I can almost always get what I need at either one. Floor staff at both are friendly, helpful, and knowledgable. The difference is at the checkout stand. At Country, the cashiers will greet you with "Hi, how are you today? Did you find everything you needed?" They will then ring up your purchases and, at the last, politely ask for your phone number for the rewards program. But at Killingworth, without making eye contact or any greeting, the two usual cashiers bark "Phone number?" and engage you no further. Once you're done, you pick up your things and say to them, "Thanks, have a good day." They don't respond because they are barking at the next customer, "Phone number?" Leaves a bad impression. It takes so little to make a good one.

TRUE VALUE does not even come close to the EXCELLENCE of this hardware store. Tom, the owner, took over several years ago from his parents (they bought the store 40 years ago). From Tom's leadership and spirit springs some of the most friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff imaginable. Until 2022 when I moved to Connecticut, I was in the hotel business in California for fifty years and owning 14 motels and Inns during those five decades I have used the services of a huge number of hardware stores...not one even comes close to Killingworth True Value. Try them once (whether you are close or quite far) and the quality of the inventory, services, staff and their knowledge will make it your to go hardware store in central Connecticut. With appreciation, Julian Bills Higganum CT.

Came here to buy specific things for work, and I really liked how this place is organized. Never got to see mid way-to the back of the store, as I only needed what was up front, which was the garden supply area. The lady who was our cashier at around 12:45pm was awesome! I only wish I got her name, cause I'm all about shoutouts for exemplary customer service. I'll definitely be back at some point, in the next 3 months.

Way overpriced and poor customer service. Drive the extra five minutes and go to Steward's Hardware in Clinton CT. Reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Brought my lawnmower here to be repaired because the manufacturer Husquvqrna said it was an authorized repair center. They took it in and then called me 2 weeks later to tell me that they wouldn't work on it . Don't bother bringing anything here for repair!!!

The store is well stocked and well organized making easy to locate what you’re looking for. The store is kept clean. The staff is helpful and never hard to find. Besides the retail store they have a service center that can help service many yard tools etc. The store is easy to get to and there’s plenty of parking

Always top notch. The owner, Tom Cost, runs one of the best hardware stores you can find anywhere. Their outdoor power equipment section is second to none. Their staff are very attentive, knowledgeable and polite. Store is always well stocked. You will find none better.

I was a loyal shopper for 20 years. That changed a few years ago when I was tried getting a can of paint an hour before they closed and was informed by the same person that supplied a can of paint less than a week before that no one was available to mix the paint at that time. I was the only customer in the store. She was rude and nasty and actually yelled at me. I shop at ace now and have always been treated with respect from very knowledgeable employees. Shop at ace in Clinton.

I thought this would be a great place to look for some tools I am in need of, but sadly I found I was wrong. True Value is such a bad business, and it starts with their products, their prices, and their employees. There prices seemed to be very outrageous, and most of their employees are bitchy and rude except for the few kids that I have seen work there. I especially noticed that the owner Tom is one of the more rude workers at True Value. I'm just trying not to use my bad language to describe him. I went into the store not too long ago, looking for some simple gardening tools for this upcoming spring season. All I was searching for was a nice new shovel and a new hoe, but sadly I did not come out of the store with what I went there for. Now all I came out with was a shovel, and no hoe. The shovel wasn't even the right kind I wanted. So I'm sorry to whoever likes shopping there, but I will have you know I am never going anywhere near that place again! Such a shame.

Killingworth continues to amaze and delight us. Our grill blew over in a recent windstorm and wasn’t functioning properly. Tom came out to pick it up for servicing. Upon closer examination it was just a safety feature we were unaware of to prevent gas leaks in a tip over. Problem solved. No further service needed. Buy local. Better yet go straight to Killingworth Hardware.

Friendly staff, good place for power equipment from Stihl and Husqvarna. Has most of what you would expect at a well-stocked hardware store.

The paint pro at this store is awesome. She is super knowledgeable about custom tinting and paint technology. And is also fun and friendly. I wish I had thought to start shopping for paint here sooner.

Just a great business! Honest and focused on customer service. Every time I go there, I wonder why I even go to Home Deport or Lowes. Try it and you will be pleased!Well done Tom senior, and his family!
