Food was ok. Specialty margarita drinks on the menu taste like the cheapest liquor ever made is included. The drinks ruined the entire meal. Chips freshly made but just ok. Everything tastes like it’s Missing something.

I have been an avid fan of Vivas for thr last 30yrs. I started going there in college, and I fell in love w the food, the owners, and the ambience. Kathy and Bruce sold the place, and I hadn't gone to check it out until this passed week... still amazing! The new owner commands the helm and demands perfection; he is ready to please. My wife had a fantastic monitor, fresh and delicious ?. We shared churros and I took some empanadas home; both were spot on. The crowd was fun, the place filled... soccer adorned the screens, and pleasant music filled our ears. Nothing has changed with the decor,, and that's a good thing; if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Vivas is a must do if you are in New Haven, CT and looking for a cool place to eat and socialize. 5 stars ?

Back in the 80s Viva Zapata was a favorite haunt of mine. I loved the drinks the food, the atmosphere. I got back to VZ once about 10 years ago and it was disappointing…Went again last night, it was excellent.!! I thank the new owners for revitalizing a staple restaurant in New Haven. I will be back!

VivaZ is a great mexican restaurant. The chips are homemade, it’s really delicious and fresh! The fajitas, burrito, rice bown… I love it! The carne assada is great! Besides the food, the service is great, everybody is friendly and kind. The environment is very unique!

Ordered a margarita pitcher and three entrees. Margarita pitcher came right away but the food took over an hour to arrive. I had to actually alert the waiter that it had, in fact, been over an hour since we had placed our food orders, and then the food was brought to us within several minutes, which pretty clearly indicated that our food orders had been forgotten. I take most issue with the fact that our waiter was not forthcoming about the fact that a mistake had been made - he attributed it to the kitchen being backed up, rather than our orders being forgotten. If the kitchen had been very busy, I'd like to think that a waiter would have, at the very least, intermittently checked in with us to let us know.By the time we left, almost two hours later, the restaurant was actually half empty, it had been so long. So it's difficult to imagine that it had been a volume issue.Pro tip: do not drink margaritas on an empty stomach without any accompanying food for over an hour or else you'll get wicked gastric reflux that will put you out of commission for the rest of the night.

Do not eat here if you are a woman. All of the male staff stared at me the entire time I ate there. It was extremely uncomfortable and it made me want to leave. I also ordered a plate that came with rice and beans. I asked if they could take the rice and beans back and they did, but it took them 20 mins to do it. It really takes 20 mins to take rice and beans off a plate??? Ridiculous.

I am a frequent Happy Hour and Dinner attendee. Last 2 visits, i am starting to see that they "nickel and dime" on everything. e.g. side of salsa along with food even when one orders multiple drinks from the bar, etc. Their attitude is what is bothering me !! Also had an issue on the check which I found after the FACT where my drinks were not charged correctly for a group of 7 WATCH OUT !!

Absolutely love everything about the new Viva Zapatta’s which is now called VivaZ Cantina. The interior is so quaint & charming & romantic (my husband and I love the atmosphere & authentic rustic decor) The service is incredible, everyone was so humble & accommodating!! We started with fresh squeezed lime margaritas & homemade chips & salsa. I had grilled chicken fajitas that were perfectly seasoned (very subtle which I like, flavorful & not salty or saucy) the onions & peppers were lightly sautéed. On the al dente side??!! The tray of sides for my fajitas was so fresh & flavorful, lots of fresh cilantro & fresh lime. My husband had the carne enchiladas with their “Out of this world, authentic”molé sauce. Even the coffee which we drink black was delicious!!! This restaurant is a gem & must try for anyone who likes authentic Mexican food (not Tex-mex) & the most charming decor?
