We were traveling through the arena on Hwy 84 at 6 am and wanted coffee. Caffe Italia was the only place open so we drove into Waterbury. Winding our way there we almost decided to turn around and then…there it was. This was like walking into a little Italian neighborhood hangout….with EXCELLENT espresso! At 6 am there was a group of local Italians, reading papers, playing cards and generally sharing the days news. It felt like being at home with family. Great atmosphere! Lots of specialty Italian food, cheeses etc. Super nice guy who made our espresso. We would definitely stop in again for more!

Come for the espresso, stay for the chat with the owner. Make sure you talk to the lovely Maria. She tells it like it is. No sugarcoating. Ask her to tell you about her "grandfather" ?

The most quaint restaurant where you'll find the owner Maria whipping up Italian desserts or a cultural dish. Most importantly there are Italian imported food/cookies. The best cappuccino!

Old-time feeling espresso bar. Husband had a craving for a cappuccino and read good reviews about this place. I can now attest that the cappuccino is excellent. Maria made them really frothy and smooth tasting. I would recommend a quick stop if you are looking for something other than Starbucks or Dunkin.

Caffe Italia is the definition of a mom & pop place. The owner Maria, a very nice older woman makes your coffee herself. It is a place that locals go to but is not unwelcoming to new faces. My wife and I have always driven by and wondered about going in and on a recent Sunday drive stopped in. We got two cappuccinos and watched Maria as she frothed the milk and used the espresso maker to create our delicious drinks. My wife usually not a fan of coffee without sugar did not ask for any and commented how smooth and non-bitter the drink tasted. I loved my drink but even more loved the atmosphere of the place. Italian products, hand written menu items and memorabilia strewn all over and old Italian men just sitting about smoking cigarettes and just chatting or people watching. They serve pastries, ice cream and food and have indoor and outdoor (during the warmer days) dining areas. I recommend stopping in for a great cup of espresso, cappuccino or some options with a little liqueur if you like and let yourself be transported back to an earlier era in this cafe.
